I posted a photo on another forum (advrider.com on my ride report) of some leaves that a guide of mine picked and gave me to try. In the circumstances... its best I say I didn't try it....

"Those leaves are kratom. In low doses it is purported to have a mild stimulating effect and in higher doses acts like an opiate pain killer. As illegal in Thailand as heroin."

No. I never liked needles and such for things that were good for me, never mind things that are bad.
I learned recently that there was an epidemic of it in the small town I grew up in after I left. Then I went to the FB site for the town and learned that a lot of the people I grew up with have since died and I am only 50 years old. I live in the city now and have known many more people than there, most of who are still alive.

Anymore I don't like the effect of much in the way of stimulants outside of a daily dose of caffeine via coffee, maybe a shared joint occasionally with friends if I have absolutely nothing else to do for the day. . .which is rare, but even alcohol does not fit in with my schedule or activities these days and really hasn't since my first son was born.

I took about 3 hits from a joint here awhile back while out fishing. It was rather nice but then the fish started biting mad and I soon lost track of the effect.

By the time I even get to thinking about being stimulated, it is near bed time and there is really no use by then and then years go by.

Not me, but an old friend from the Merchant Marine said he did it fairly regularly when traveling in SE Asia. He said it was just another high, nice but nothing special, and he was never addicted.

Truth? I don't know but that's what he said.

I've never tried it but I've known people who have used it just a few times a year. It's not immediately addictive and is apparently a superb painkiller. It would be ideal for pain management in palliative care situations...ie cancer pain. With a supply of good quality it is possible to lead a perfectly productive life without serious side effects; as long as you don't stop taking it.
I've no desire to try it. Building a boat is a big enough addiction for me.

I never did but my buddies became hooked when we were young.

Most people do not know you get sick the first time and it takes a bit of effort to become hooked.

My buddies would all doze off and collapse, I had MCs to ride and goils to chase..

I had no time for such foolishness as dozing off in a slumber with other deadbeats. I remember being in a room with 10 addicts shooting up .I got tagged as being a doper just cause these were my friends.

A few died of overdose and some died later of liver damage..

Course to be fair i think some people have Additive personality's, I could stop smoking cold turkey the next day after having a 2 pack habit..

I do not think im better just not prone to being addicted..

The lads I work with in the substance abuse clinic call it "chasing the dragon". Forever trying to repeat the first hit. I have several addictions, but, not any which will lead to complete degradation. Thank the great spirit for that.

You won't see me doing it.... and I only chewed on that damn leaf because I thought it was a local foodstuff. Hell's bells, there's some sort of weed or leaf in most of the meals here. Everything from Morning Glory through to flowers.

I used to work with a woman who used heroin. I didn't have a clue she was a user until she told me after she left.

Corkwood? Maybe but there are 2 species, the eastern species (far west QLD to abt eastern NT) is the more potent. Usually chewed with campfire white ashes to adulterate the level of effect. Have seen and been offered same. Mitchell the "explorer" offered comparison to a few large tots of whiskey in effects.

Captain was in it in Nam.(It was everywhere) He went cold turkey to come back to the USA. Knew they were testing. His guts were paralyzed. Came home clean.

I agree about the 'addictive personality" thing but I think there's a fair dose of physical resistance to it as well. Onc knew a nurse who could drink anyone under the table because her body did not absorb alcohol. It just ran right through her system unabsorbed.

Jerry Garcia was a junkie and died in rehab at the age of 53. But I doubt it was his heroin use that did him in. The cause of death was a heart attack. Besides heroin addiction Garcia had long struggled with weight problems, sleep apnea, a long standing cigarette habit, and diabetes all of which contributed to his physical decline.

As for Keith Richards... I predict the cigarettes will do him in. When he laughs you can hear the congestion in his lungs. I'm sure he already has emphysema.

A good friend of mine was a junkie until he hired into Ford Motor Company in 1976. He spent three days in a motel room kicking cold turkey before reporting to work Monday morning.

Unfortunately, like many junkies who kick heroin on their own, he substituted alcohol and any other pill he could get his hands on. After years in and out of rehab he finally sobered up for good in 1991 and has been straight and sober ever since. Unfortunately he now has cirrhosis of the liver and is not long for this world without a transplant.
