Default Repair strip plank lobster boat ribs

Restoring Alton Wallace 18 foot lobster boat.

Problem of 10-12 ribs separated from strip planking at turn of bilge, how to repair?

Separation of 1/2 inch from planking by 8 inches length

Oak Ribs 1 inch wide 1/2 inch thick, cedar plank edge nailed 1 " by 3/4 "

All fasteners bronze nails, only one broken rib, not located at separation position.

    Suggestions?

picture posted, carpenter square inserted into gap between strip plank and rib

I have experimented with nut, bolt, washer, lock washer to pull rib to planks.

Rib will move under this fastening. Screws also moved rib but not in as a controlled fashion as the nut/bolt process.

    thanks for your interest.7526152712_c98815e133_t.jpgphpE8sra2AM.jpg

New member stilling looking for help. Experiencing obstacles posting pictures larger than thumb nails.

Strip planking is likely pine rather than cedar.

Advice/comments on my situation would be most appreciated.

    Thank you.

If you're near the home of West Point Skiffs, Phippsburg, Me., West Point, you might want contact Dick Nichols on the West Point Rd., he is THE builder of todays West Point Skiff's, still builds them the same way Alton Wallace did except for the bronze fasteners, most of the originals had galvanized fasteners. IMHO aside from being very functional, they are the prettiest little boats ever made.

Then just post a link to your Flickr album, or try again. If you are using the picture loader from here, that looks like a little movie screen. Open the "from url" tab BE SURE you uncheck the box that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally " if you continue to have a hard time PM me for my email address and I'll post them for you

Such a clean looking boat! Apparently, the frames were not glued to the planking and the planking was minimally fastened to the frames.
Or, maybe some odd flexing happened just there , like maybe trailer damage.
    Got me.
Asking the builders whats up is in order. They may say , just ignore it.
I think a few rivets would be in order, as the boat seems to have not been built without glue. Try to avoid a bunch of bolts or screws that may weaken the frames.

Yes, rib damage is a concern, wood boat restoration pledge, would include due "no more harm" and consider the "next restoration. "

Thin fasteners such as rivets are likely subject for repair.

Everyone, Thank you for the input.
