Haiku launched

Ok, not a full size haiku. But it is real nonetheless. I followed Iain’s plans as closely as possible although I obviously cut many corners by using lots of glue, I haven’t added the hardware, and the scantlings I cared about were cosmetic.
I hope to build a one-foot equals one-foot scale model one day, if I can get the ducks lined up. But until then I wanted to explore if the haiku is the boat for me. I wanted to be able to actually see how much space is available in the cabin. The figure, if scaled up, would be 6 foot tall.
I also wanted to see the boat on the water. So I made the model into a pond yacht. These sails are cut from a bed sheet stiffened with linseed oil. I will make better sails. I will also fit the boat with RC. But it tracks nicely with those two centerboards and Scandinavian style rudder. We can now say that at least in scale, these ideas work nicely. And as you can see, the boat knows how to point a lot better than that dog who sticks his nose into the video.

I am having a lot of fun with this. And world is a better place with another wooden boat sailing, even if it is a little boat.

The scale is 1"=1', which was easy because the plans are one-to-one. To figure out the ballast, I painted the water line and added lead until it settled on the line. I fixed the ballast to the end of the center boards (which you can see in the video) because I didn't want to flip the boat and lose it in the middle of the lake before I could motor over to it. On a less gusty day I put the weight on the cabin sole and she sailed just fine. When I get the RC adapted I will play around more with the ballast distribution.
