Default Classic yacht regatta in Berlin - 30 June 2012

Should any WBF readers/members be in Berlin this weekend: the German Classic Yacht Club "Freundeskreis Klassische Yachten" (http://www.fky.org/english.htm) is holding the annual classic regatta on the lake-like Havel river.

    Havel Klassik (ASV): 30. Juni/ 1. Juli 2012
    www.asv-berlin.de

Info: Claus Reichardt, Beckerstr. 6, 12157 Berlin, Tel. 0331 271680

On Sunday 1 July, there will be a fleet parade of classic yachts. Several of the boats are 100+ years old!

    Cheers,

    Gernot H.

P.S. On page 10 of the http://www.asv-berlin.de/fileadmin/d...assik_2012.pdf program and notice of race there is a map of the course.

    June 30 2012:
Dinghies and smaller classes jostling for the starting line. Misty damp weather, very light airs. ~ 10:30 a.m.

The dinghies are off, now the larger craft have to get a good starting line position:

The medium-sized, more maneuverable boats get off before the largest ones:

Some hours later, the weather has improved, but there is still too little wind and the antique racing dinghies are on the home stretch:

Followed by the grand old ladies:

Cool! A few Dragons in the fleet as well eh? Did you or Pamela get any close ups of them?

Are the big dinghies a Berlin OD?

    Hi Duncan,
3rd picture, D-170, just behind the flag of the big navy-blue cruiser, is a dragon. I believe the boat immediately in front of that is a dragon as well.
We were on shore and Pam had to use a long focal length tele to get these shots (shake problem). The race took far longer than planned, the wind being so weak. We were invited to a friend's birthday and therefore had to leave our viewing station halfway up the course after the first boats had passed on the homeward leg. So we didn't get the dragons close-up.
The big dinghies are design formula classes (i.e. not one-designs) from various parts of Germany. The "H"-class formula is still being used for new boats on and off, with modern rigs. It was among the ancestors of the Flying Dutchman class and has spawned some very fast specimens.
Basics: formulated in 1921 as a "cruising dinghy" (Wanderjolle)

    • 6,20 m
    • Minimum beam: 1,70 m
    • Maximum beam: 2,15 m (although a 2,21 m boat has been built)
    • Minimum hull wt.: 190 kg; (oldies weigh between 300 and 450 kg!)

    Mast and sails

    • Maximale height: 7.50 m
    • measurement sail area: 15 m² by measurement rules - actually more -which explains the fully-battened curved sail shapes of the gunter-rigged versions
    • Spinnaker: maximum 36 m²

For a good idea of the variety of different modern boats and details see http://www.h-jolle.net/13gallery/DM_2010/index.html

The M-class was formulated even earlier: 1914.
The design rules also specify a 15 square metre sail area, but the boat was conceived as a racing dinghy and was originally cat-rigged because reaching courses were more frequently sailed by the gentleman mariners of the days.
On the class home page's photo album (http://m-jolle.de/2.html) you can see some line drawings "Risse" and a slide show of one of their meetings under "Klassentreffen". Under "M226" there is "Restauration" slide show of the boat being restored and "Auf dem Wasser" of her sailing, with some cool action photos taken on the Hamburg "Alster" (a lake-like widened river in the middle of town).

We "live" up the river from the venue and going on the day-sailer would have meant getting up at six, motoring through Spandau and the locks with the mast down and then back up again in the evening. We are also experiencing some nasty thunderstorms - a mini tornado ripped through Tegel on Friday night, leaving an apartment block without a roof, several brick chimneys of older buildings blown over and hundreds of trees broken or uprooted. So it was not too enticing anyway. I believe the parade on Sunday was called off for that reason. At noon, we only saw a few isolated "Schärenkreuzer" out among all the plastic boats. I suppose if you have spent years lovingly restoring or maintaining a 50-year-old + yacht, you don't want to run the risk of wrecking it in a storm.
    Hope things are progressing well!
    Cheers,
    Gernot H.

And here is a professional slide show (I recommend right-clicking on the black background and selecting the speed = fast in the Options menu, there are 255 pictures!)

Awesome footage of the Sonder Klasse in film #2. Do I see runners that go all the way to the stern on that boat?

Lovely fleet there Gernot! Was that a 6M about 3.40 in the first video?

Yes, G 25 is a 6-Metre named "Luv". There is a longish shot of her sailing in the second video.
Incidentally, S 41 "Jugend", a Sonderklasse (built in 1911 as "Jugend II", for English description see http://www.sonderklasse-yachten.de/sonderclasskurz.html) and which won the "Kranichpokal" cup in 1912, was first ship home, overall winner of the keelboat classes and second overall by corrected time, thus winning the same cup 100 years after her first win of the same prize. The lady lying on her bow is on the lookout for sandbanks as the course is quite narrow in places and the boats had to avoid the commercial barges and pleasure ships as well.
For a list of the keelboats, showing the classes, see the race results PDF : http://www.asv-berlin.de/fileadmin/d...ielyachten.pdf . The site http://www.asv-berlin.de/de/regatten/havel-klassik.html also has links to the overall results and other category results as well as to the photo albums ("Fotos:").

It was a fascinating sight and I shall definitely try to be here for next year's event.

I'm not sure about the rigging details. Perhaps the photostreams are clearer, or maybe details on other pages such as the class association's (http://www.sonderklasse-yachten.de/) or the links on that page.

    Gernot,

Are there any boating events there or around Nordsee during September?

Gernot, Purri (Rick) is a sailor. Here's his boat, the Amber K:

Ahhh... And I note you've already posted to that thread! Rick was going to fetch us up some more photographs!

Thanks for the shame job Duncan. Nah, I have some new digi pics to post but I've been slack.

Gernot, We will be in Europe in AUG 2013 (World Masters Rowing at Lago di Viverrone now shifted to Lago di Candia near Torino) thence through lower France and to Biarritz, Brest/Douarnez and Germany etc departing Frankfurt late SEP. Maritime activities and kunstshaus are a priority.

    Suggestions from all parties welcome.

    @Purri:
Do I correctly read then that you did not mean this coming September?
I'll keep an eye on the agenda of the Friends of Classic Yachts etc. for you.
This year's boat show in Berlin is between 23. - 28. November 2012, I'm afraid. Not sure what's on up North.

    Any time mate!

SWIMPAL goes to Frankfurt fairly often for work and reckons the Maritime Museum is pretty damned good: An almost complete Viking ship dug out of the river, plus a bundle of other stuff. Mainz has the Gottenburg Museum as well. I dig up some more stuff for you in due course.
