Default An unfortunate update to the boy's cruise

He's in the hospital as of this evening. We have spoken a couple of times, he said he woke up fine but began to feel ill shortly thereafter. Couldn't get off the head began to get weak and dizzy. He's getting an IV for dehydration now pending blood work and a stool culture. If he recovers quickly enough and gets the Doc's ok, he's back on the boat - if not, he's coming home.

He's not real happy at the moment. Thankfully they were close enough to shore to run him in.

    I bet he's pissed....

Tell him I hope he bounces back soon so he can return to the boat.

Well, this is the end of his trip. I just dropped my wife off at Baltimore airport for a flight up. He became uncontrollably sick this am after he awoke at the base camp, precipitating a trip back to the hospital. fever up, wbc count up and belly/flank pain. Ultrasound inconclusive, dye contrast CAT scan shows no appendicitis (he had all the symptoms). Doc says it is viral, has caused marked swelling of the peritoneal lymph nodes, mimicking the symptoms of appendicitis. Poor kid can barely stand. We were talking to him on the phone and he asked the doc if he could go out again if he felt better by thursday - we heard the gent reply that he felt it could very likely result in a relapse, sorry, the trip is over for you. My son's next words were,"I've failed". My wife was in tears. I reassured him that getting sick was NOT failure - quitting for some petty reason, maybe but NOT illness. He said that even with all this he'd had 4 great days. I asked him if he'd like to try again, he said if it were at all possible, yes. The Outward Bound staffers have been very caring and supportive.

    Now to get them home.

I bet he's bummed, but, as you said, getting sick doesn't equate to failure.

If the chance for another Outward Bound trip doesn't come through, something better will.

    Peace.

Man that's a bummer!! Hope he gets well soon and I hope he gets to try again. I can only imagine how he feels but we can't choose when we get sick. I don't know which would be worse, the disappointment from missing the rest of his trip or feeling poorly from illness.

Real bummer. Let's hope he's okay. That they find the problem and fix it quickly.

Wow... Sounds like a bad case of what happened to me up in Ontario one year.... A water borne viral infection we called "The creeping Canadian crud", which was in fact Giardia.....
It whipped me into a whimpering jelly like mass of sweat covered yuck, out in the bush..... Thankfully we came across a trappers shack with a wood stove to dry out in and cook some proper food, (which I couldn't eat for 2 days).... And apparently the case I had was "Just a touch"....
