It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
It appears that a Colorado River toad has hopped into Donn's garden and was inadvertently licked by the gardener.

See?..... Now if you'd used a drill press and a century old hand forged slick, you could have achieved a fine lamb's tongue profile in less than twice the time.....

That's a great picture of a Rafflesia - but why don't those two people have clothes pins over their noses?

I think that I recognise that species of timber. Rots quicker that bread goes stale.

Hi Sam. I'l take your question as proof positive that you don't know everything.
They only stink when they are decomposing... and they have a similar odour (then) to a decomposing rat.
.... and btw... I'm one of those two people. You can use your deductive logic to work out which one.

I went to a deli counter the other day, and it had a special for 5.09 a pound, but there was nothing in the "what" was on special, so I asked for a pount of the 5.09 nothing. I wanted to see how much nothing it takes to make a pound.
Congress begins every day with a prayer. Enough said.
You must be right... and I thought Rafflesia's were pollinated by elephants too. Maybe I had a touch of malaria that day...
I'm not terribly familiar with decomposing rat - though I am with mouse. Perhaps they're similar. Since the plants are pollinated by flies I assumed that their odor was present earlier - like other fly pollinated blooms I know - Stapelias (nice if you fancy maggots in flowers) or the various species of Amorphophallus. I used to grow A. riveri and it put out the most appalling stink from the moment it opened. There was no way to stay in the same room with it! That plant's bloom was also the fast growing thing I have ever seen.
I'm ahead of you on that one!

The shaving pony is essentially a clamp. It's just a much faster-acting clamp. All I have to do to reposition the piece is release the foot pressure...turn the piece...reapply the pressure.
I don't have room for a shaving horse, so this is my substitute. I made it to be mounted at two different heights...sitting (~38") and standing (~44"). The photos above are at the sitting height. Here's the standing height, which I'll also use for longer pieces, since the vise swivels:

Nope. I know about that. Not that I approve mind you...
I understand now, you just wanted the Big Kitty to get me first.
But we have our wildlife on Western Virginia too. This happened just a few miles from my house:
The cyclist made the mistake of carrying his lunch in one of those saddlebags. Must have smelled yummy. (I doubt it was the roller blades) The bear, a baby one really, next knocked over the bike.
The cyclist upon his return blamed the fellow who happened to be near by. Said chap just laughed and showed him the camera's photos.
Incidentally I ran off a much bigger bear that kept getting into the garbage. Given that I only had a 22 with me at the time - it wasn't exactly my brightest moment.
Poor thing was killed by a car a couple of days later - it probably didn't do the car much good either.

They're useful for all sorts of things. I'll use it primarily for making tool handles, but now and again I'll clamp something else into it for other purposes.
It's piled with a bunch of stuff I just moved out from the house, and is headed for the pegboard.
Any thing larger than a baseball bat will be to large for that shaving vice to hold, unless it's moved to a different space , then the problem becomes how to hold the vice firmly enough to make it work. It's a rich mans toy at best, a novelty item that will see little use.
But it sure is purty, well, if that bench top wasn't such a frickin mess!
Ah ,,,,ya sure , just move the peg board on the wall , cut out and header off the stud that's right in line , cut out the siding and trim it off so it looks nice , hinge this new hatch , ya sure easy peasy.
I stand by my statement on the situation , it's damned near useless where it's located. For any thing of any larger sized item than baseball bat. YMMV and I'm sure Donn's mileage on this subject and possibly this thread does vary!!
The only question is , IMO, how much longer it will remain unlocked?
Grouch.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
Maybe , that's what the project manager says as well, but then again the "think" is,,, "it'll be easy",, not how much will it cost , how long will it take , what really needs to be done,, for these "easy peasy" fixes to issues that where not thought thru properly in the first place.
I hear that almost daily , "It'll be easy" followed by " I've got to go, can you have it done before noon??" LOL, but it's a living!!
You have very little imagination.
It will hold anything up to 3 1/2" wide by 9" high. If I clamp it into the orange bench vise in the last photo, it's got a straight run out the front door, which is 16' away.
As far as holding something firmly, I can stand on the end of the base, and the clamp has several hundred pounds of hold, with high-friction material on both jaws. If I wanted to, I could use a draw knife on a huge chunk of Hornbeam, like this one, at 2.62" x 2.88" x 19"
And, since you brought it up, here's an Ash baseball bat blank, 2 7/8"D x 37"L:
It has more to do with the sharpness of the knife than the hold of the shaving vise.
Edit to add...All of my tools are rich man's toys, Paulie. I don't need them to make a living, and they exist for my pleasure alone. Put that fact in your tool belt and schlep it around at work all day.![]()
