I made a road trip today, went to an interesting place and met a couple of real legends!
I didn't set out to meet them but it was a real bonus.
The guy on the left here is Ingvar Ankervik, a very important figure in the modern history of kayaks and the owner of VKV.
The guy on the right is Sven Yrvind! He's just about to take delivery of a new kevlar composite kayak.
One of the Yrvind boats is in the background, I think it's the latest one 'Yrvind.com' without a traditional keel.Instead of a keel or a centerboard the boat has a box like form with two chines along the bottom edges, like narrow horizontal fins, providing lateral stability.
The man has been round the world singelhandedly more times than I can remember in tiny little boats of about 20' of his own design.
The boats are full of clever inventions and ingenious solutions. (The fact that his pants are held up by a rope tied with a knot of his own invention is just a minor detail)
When the trend went to stiffer hulls he said "idiots" and built his boats from dacron reinforced polyester, yep dacron as in old sails!
He stood in the boat fair beating his hull with a sledge hammer to show that a flexible hull could withstand any amount of abuse. An ordinary GRP hull was smashed into smithereens for comparison but his boat went on to circumvent the globe.
Amazing old man! He also invented a sextant that's the size of a thumb nail with enough precision to navigate any water.
This boat is a far cry from what the guys at the warf usually do.
This one was being finished for delivery, they where supposed to have left for Gothenburg half an hour before the pic was taken
