So Rotec Engineering, founded by an aviation enthusiast, spent years developing a line of 7 and 9 cylinder radials for small experimental airplanes; only to find his largest market is custom choppers. . .

Ian should be very proud, Rotec is an Australian aerospace company, making state of the engines circa mid 1920's technology.

I heard something with a radial engine fly over a couple of weeks ago, it was in the sun though. Love the sound.

    THIS is a rotary engine:

Paul recently posted a picture of a motorcycle with a rotary engine in the front wheel. A lovely thing, but surely it would be dreadful to ride.

I like the way the designer solved the problem of no cooling airflow to the rear cylinders. He merely mounts an insubstantial gas tank which will be sucked dry before the motor seizes.
    Perfectly simple, simply perfect.

True, but nothing looks and sounds sweeter than a radial. I worked on some at the warbird museum when I was younger as a helper.

I understand how rotary engines worked. But I have never gotten my head around why anyone would rotate the cylinders around the shaft. Just creates too many obvious problems in my mind. Almost, "What were they thinking?"

There's an RE5 which lives just along the road - very pretty in its own quaint way.

I rather like this one - though why they fitted a chain is beyond me.

Actually it's a "Gnome et Rhone". They made conventionally engined bikes too.

My cousin part owns and flies this, a Yak 52.

The Yakovlev Yak-52 (Як-52) is a Soviet trainer aircraft which first flew in 1976. The Yak-52 was designed originally as an aerobatic trainer for students in the Soviet DOSAAF training organisation, which trained both civilian and military pilots.
The all-metal Yak-52 is powered by a 268 kW (360 hp) Vedeneyev M14P 9-cylinder supercharged radial engine. The aircraft has inverted fuel and oil systems permitting inverted flight for as long as two minutes.
