Default Picture of Woods Hole Waterfront

I've been in Woods Hole for a week staying at the WHOI docks as a guest of the institution and took this picture of the waterfront:

The only vessel in the picture that I didn't design is Strider!

There is a 13.6 meg video of the day I spent on the WHOI research vessel Tioga (far left) here:

I'm heading for Maine Thursday with my son via Provincetown in hope of seeing some of the many whales reported to be in Cape Cod Bay and between there and Maine.

We tied up at those docks for a few days back around 1981, just astern of Alvin's tender. We were doing hi-res seafloor mapping to locate a drillrig just south of George's Bank and had stopped in for groceries and to wait for repair parts. I actually got to meet Dr. Ballard one day when I'd sneaked aboard to stick my head down into Alvin, which was a big moment for my young self.

I also recall being asked to leave a local waterfront dive because my shorts, for some reason, refused to stay up while standing at the bar that night. Ahhh youth.

I hope it isn't thread drift to indulge in a memory of that place [oh,I see that ice has already been broken]. My Brother and Sister In Law lived together for many years before marriage ; so when they did marry , since I'd come back up to New England for the wedding and had sailed there with my brother for years growing up ; they invited me on the first leg of their "honey moon "cruise . We stopped at Newport ,Cutty hunk ; and then Woods Hole ,where I left the boat.

I scrambled up one of the ladders you can see inset on the left side of that big concrete pier with my duffle bag slung over my shoulder (I'd mailed all the wedding cloths home from a tiny post office in Noank CT ) ; then made my way to the terminal of the ferry to Martha’s Vinyard where I could catch a bus to Logan airport .Seems like we should have touched at that pier ,but I can't second guess the decision at this late date .We probably didn't want to impede the ferry .

They went on ,among other places ,to Montauk ,where they anchored outside the harbor to avoid the crowd . However , it suddenly kicked up rough in the night .They buoyed the rode and worked their way into more sheltered water ; dropping their second anchor . This (CQR) they'd just received from me as a wedding present ,with 150 feet of rode attached (especially carefully spliced up ) and the shackle pin monel wired in place with an extra turn.

This has been the last thing I have seen before going to sleep and the first thing on opening my eyes for the past few days:

This is the rig of the Corwith Cramer which I designed. It was built almost exactly to my plans and I can almost remember every little decision and detail when I study it.

Port visits don't get much better than this. My son arrives today and we leave for Portland routing through the Right Whale grounds which are full of whales according to recent reports.

    Another "Cramer" story here:

Yes, the right whales are doing quite well these days. Here's a link to a recent newspaper article: http://thechronicleherald.ca/canada/...on-the-rebound

It's nice to see a 'good-news' item about the environment once in a while!

That must make you very proud, Roger. I would think Woods Hole would be quite nice this time of year.

Before writing this, I perused your website looking for particulars on Strider. I had no idea you were so prolific. What a career. I think your 23' cutter is beautiful. And the story (and check) that goes along with it is something else altogether. Congratulations -Aaron

Woods Hole is, indeed, capable of being quite nice this time of year except for the tourists. From the perspective of someone who lives in the village, the ferry is a plague - a plague of traffic, of illegal parking, of foreigners driving too fast down Millfield Street, of stinky buses delivering people to the ferry, of PA system blatting racket all over Juniper Point. You get the picture.
