Default eight outboards - one day - one hull - phew! - film

Practical Boat Owner borrowed my boat to do some outboard tests

eight 5hp units in one day

blimy it was a long old day

I launched the boat the night before - and had a lovely little sail on the 40 acre lake where I raced my Solo every sunday and where my kids learned to sail

notice the break back trailer and tolly

then I had an amazing day with the two hacks from the magazine

I expected all the outboards - all long shaft four stroke 5hp units - to be much of a muchness

not at all true - some had the 23 foot Minstrel up to hull speed really quickly - otheres never even got close to hull speed

the variation in the bollard pull tests was amazing

no idea if it was the way the engines were set up or what props they came with

hopefully when the magazine is publsihed I shall find out

finally came the tough business of recovering the boat for the first time

I did it at 6.30 in the morning, no wind, no tide, no line of eager mobo guys waiting for the slip while the old bloke faffs for Britain

I can do it faster next time

Keep up the good work, Dr. Dylan. Curious about the results of the outboard tests. Guess I'll have to buy the magazine. The trailer thingie was interesting too. I'm pretty sure you'll load the boat quicker next time but maybe I'm still being overly optimistic.

I've never seen a trailer rig like that one but I've come to understand they are in pretty wide use everywhere except in the USA.

recovering a biggish boat is always tougher than launching it

you can see in the film that it kep on slipping back on the trolly

it was not until I put a rop to both the boat and the trailer that it worked properly

it does save getting the wheels wet - which is great.

It tows pretty well - needs a bit of balancing to get the nose weight right

and getting it up my drive is a right son of a gun.

However, as a freelance I often run out of money so it means that by spending £100 on fuel and rental van I can bring the boat home and kill my costs stone dead

Just for yuks I'd like to see a comparison with say a Palmer BH detuned to 5 hp.

John Atkin once made a 17 foot box keel seabright skiff (the happy clam) without the tunnel stern and it got up on plane in heavy chop off Loyd's Neck NY, using a Palmer single very like this one.
