    Lightbulb

Suisun Bay, north of San Franciso near the mouth of the Sacramento River close by a town called Benecia(sp).
    Looks like to me.

Couple of movies made around them.
One a shoot'em up with James Caan and Robert Duval which had a really nice motorsailer in it too.

Yes, that's a small part of the "Mothball Fleet" in Suisun Bay, near Benicia, which is just north of SF.

Its a really ghostly sight when you come upon it. Ships in rows as far as you can see.

I think this is an inventory of the ships:

And here's a place to spend some time:

That kind of reminds me of the mothball fleet that used to be up the Hudson River up until the early 1970's. There must have been hundreds of liberty ships anchored up there all rafted together. They were lined up for a couple of miles along the western side. Anyone else remember them?

There used to be a whole mess of liberty ships moored in St. Andrews bay Florida when I was a kid. Anyone remember those?

Back when we commissioned MMA's new training ship, a group of us got to go through some of the James River RRF fleet to salvage anything useful. You wouldn't BELIEVE the amount of stuff out there. We were like kids in a candy store, going room to room and pulling just staggering assortments of odds and ends out into the passageway. TVs, movies, survival suits, fire axes, about fifty pounds worth of micrometers, tools, and just about anything else you could think of. Filled a Ryder truck, and that was just from two ships. Amazing.

    Donn,
The pages you posted list various commercial vessels, and the fleet in Suisuin Bay is consists of US Naval vessels. I would love to find an inventory of that fleet. I have been able to identify a hospital ship, a battle ship (I think), a small aircraft carrier, many smaller fighting ships, and many supply ships and oilers. But no names from the distance I see them which is the shipping channel which is about two miles to the south.

When kept a boat in Narraganset Bay in the 70's, there were four or five LNG carrier that were built in response to the oil crisis of that era. They were docked in Newport, but I don't remenber the name of the yard. If memory serves, they never hauled a cargo because the crisis was long past by the time they were commissioned. I wonder if any one knows what happened to them.

An old warship. The boat was auctioned, after a fire. She took the land surveyor John Smith, and his Father, 5 years to repair, and repaint. The ship is now whale watching. Formally HMAS Sir Joseph Banks, She is Miss Poly, ... to the whales.

Like a whale, ... she is a knot and a half faster than the current.

    A few figures.

    Countdown.
