Bicycle saddles per se don't cause any problems, any more than shoes cause blisters. Poorly fitted and adjusted saddles (or shoes) can. What most leisure cyclists don't realise is that a bike should fit the rider, just like a pair of shoes. A correctly fitted saddle will not put pressure on the perineum. The weight is taken on the sit bones, not the perineum.
I had major surgery in that area a year ago. I was riding my bikes a couple of weeks after surgery in perfect comfort...because my bikes and saddles fit me perfectly, and I built them to fit me. My bike saddles were more comfortable for a while than any other form of seating. Most cyclists won't go to the expense or effort to do that. It's easier to blame an inanimate object.
I ride 250km. a week and I have 5 bikes. I've been riding for nearly 50 years.
What's your cycling experience Larksie?

http://www.medicinenet.com/script/ma...ticlekey=84072In another meta-analysis investigating perineal symptoms and cycling (62 articles), numbness of the genitalia was reported in 50%-91% of all cyclists, and erectile dysfunction was reported in 13%-24% of all cyclists.
In a study of perineal compression and blood flow to the penis in male cyclists, penile blood supply decreased significantly in 70% of the 40 cyclists who participated in the study. Numbness in the genital area was reported by 61% of the cyclists, and 19% of the cyclists who rode their bikes more than 250 miles per week complained of erectile dysfunction.
You really are starting to let a lot of errors slip in Steve.

Gee, that's an easy one. Took all of 20 seconds on Google
Cycling rates are relatively low in Australia, but cyclists comprise about 1 in 40 traffic crash fatalities and about 1 in 7 seriousinjuries.

Cyclists killed (from your link):"In the six years between 2003 and 2008, traffic-related fatalities
for cyclists in Australia ranged between 26 and 43. On average
there were 36 deaths per year, representing 2.3% of all road deaths."
Motorcyclists killed:"Facts & Figures
About 224 motorcycle riders were killed in road crashes in Australia in 2009.
A much greater number of motorcyclists are seriously injured each year: in 2006–07, 7,303 riders were admitted to hospital as a result of a road crash."

Can't see how you can claim it could possibly be a myth if you've had to go out make funny shaped seats to suit yourself. Not everyone can afford, or indeed would be aware of, any other seats than those that are available off the shelf or which come with your bike. Really Steve, you need to get over this infatuation with disagreeing with everything Ian says just for the sake of being contrary.

.How much for the Brooks Swallow seat? The first one that I found on the web was $350.00, which is more than the cost of my bike. How many people do you really think could afford to buy something like that for their bike?because my bikes and saddles fit me perfectly, and I built them to fit me. My bike saddles were more comfortable for a while than any other form of seating. Most cyclists won't go to the expense or effort to do that
Why exactly were you compelled to buy a seat like that yourself?
Seriously Steve, the original comment that you were compelled to dive on was simply that the pressure exerted by bike seats has been know to cause lots of problems with men. I statement that is patently true, how about being a little less arrogant for a change and concede that there is indeed truth in that simple statement rather than going to all of this effort to simply get one up on Ian?

some problems with some men and women. Also any bicycle seat can cause problems with some men and women. Some bicycle seats alleviate some problems just as change in posture/position can alleviate/exacerbate some problems. I'll dig into the study to see how the problem was defined.
"In a study called a meta-analysis (where many studies on the same subject are summarized), results of 35 studies conducted between 1981 and 2004 that examined the relationship between cycling and erectile dysfunction showed that the prevalence of moderate to severe erectile dysfunction in bicyclists was 4.2%
"
I'd call "moderate to severe dysfunction" "lots of problems" but don't think 4.2% reflects a significant portion of the population. What isn't shown in the article is the rate of frequency for problems in the other statistics. Did it occur once in X years of cycling or multiple times in a year. Kind of like hand numbness in cycling or motorcycling. Does it happen all the time or vary according to conditions?

I'll check with the study but as important is the correlation between conditioning and uninterrupted time on the saddle and "problems". If a rider simply sits in one position for hours on end and rarely gets out of the saddle it can cause problems compared to another cyclist who gets out of the saddle every few minutes for a few seconds.
there's no way around it, saddles with some manner of cut-out reduce pressure on the perineum. Brooks makes cut out versions of their saddles to address that issue. No reason to get a rise from Pauls teasing. I tried breaking in leather saddles a few times and the discomfort just wasn't worth it compared to off the shelf saddles, that they work for some people doesn't apply to everyone.

this is interesting:
"In a study of erectile dysfunction and bicycle characteristics, researchers determined that keeping handlebar height lower than saddle height in long-distance cyclists was associated with less erectile dysfunction"
Upright posture puts more vertical load on the saddle and less ability to get out of the saddle. Fatter people are more likely to have their seats lower than the handlebars. I'm fatter than I used to be with bars 1" lower than seat but when younger my bars were about 3" lower than seat. It's easy to ride off the saddle when stretched out and some weight on the bars, sitting upright your only technique for getting out of the saddle is standing up and slowing down the pedaling cadence.
"In a study of erectile dysfunction and bicycle characteristics, researchers determined that keeping handlebar height lower than saddle height in long-distance cyclists was associated with less erectile dysfunction"
"What can be done to prevent perineal symptoms?
1. Stand up frequently on the pedals to take pressure off the perineum. 2. Change your position on the saddle while biking. Shift forward and backward when you ride to eliminate pressure on just one part of the perineum. "

I didn't get invited either.
On saddles, it helps to look at how much time you spend on one. Before my crash I was averaging 4 hours a week every week of the year on the commuter bike and I also use that one for rec rides under 30 miles. Spending $125 on a brooks B-67 was a no brainer. The touring bike has a terry mens Y saddle, at only 300-400 miles I'm still not sure I like it, but it has been the best one so far. As SB alluded earlier, frame fit has a lot to do with comfort, and the old nishiki is close but not spot on for more than 40-50 miles a day with a break every hour. Probably because I have mountain bike bars on instead of the drop bars it came with originally.
In fact, if you can saw a penciled line, apply glue, drive nails, and bring a modest measure of patience to the task, you can build and launch a smart and able craft in as few as 40 work hours. You need not be driven by lack of tools, materials, skills, or time to abandon in frustration a project you conceived in a spirit of pleasurable anticipation.
-Dynamite Payson
How does a guy see where he's going when the bars are lowered that much?
I do alright on short bits, but any more than 10km and my neck is killing me.
The seat doesn't bother me at all....'course the trouble with numbness is that you can't feel it.
