Thread: Wanted - Brockway Type Skiff

Default Wanted - Brockway Type Skiff

I have owned many fiberglass boats from 16'-40' over the last 40 years and now looking for my first wooden vessel. I'd like to find a nice little skiff to take the kids fluke/striper fishing and do some personal photography on Barnegat Bay, NJ. The Brockway Skiff looks like a suitable design but it's not indigenous to my area. I'm looking for a reputable builder to make me one in either wood, sheeting and/or any combination of the two. Any recommendations, suggestions or personal experiences would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Spokaloo will be by, no doubt, to give you his experiences. If you are thinking of building your own boat, the consensus seems to be that you couldn't choose an easier/ more straightforward design. Do a search here and you can see Spokaloo's build sans words- it's quite a good thread. Old Wharf has the plans for a song.

You can buy one from Walt at Old Wharf Dory in Wellfleet, Ma or Joe Williams in Falmouth and tow it home. It's about a 7 hr. ride from here.

You might try Beaton Boat Yard in Brick, NJ.

What is the consensus on the cost to build the 16 lys? Safe being first priority, sticking with the lumberyard theme of no glass and underlayment...

Spokaloo did this build using probably the most cost-effective, quality, hard-wearing materials available. He continues to beat the heck out of it and be very happy with the boat. I think he has $600 or $800 in the hull, plus the outboard. The design is optimized for efficient use of sheet material so you get the most boat for your buck. His build thread is here: http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthre...nce&highlight=

Obviously you can spend more- a lot more. You could spend less too, but it seems Spokaloo used the materials to make a quality, lasting boat at the best possible cost.

I just saw Walt at Old Wharf has one advertised for sale, built with marine ply ready for paint.

If you want one built, call Walt.

I have $600 in mine for materials, paint, fasteners, etc. The current 25hp motor on it was $500.

I keep it in the water over the winter while the lake is drawn down 14 feet below high water. Sadly I had a plug foul, had to leave it in a little bay, and it froze hard that night (14 degrees). Split the lower unit in half...

The 25 is actually a better motor than the 30 was, as it has fewer hours and is lighter. It's definitely plenty.

If you end up over here on the dry side of the hill, you're welcome to go for a cruise in my LYS.
