This morning at Target in Roseville MN, about as normal middle America as one can get (the very first Target store, BTW), in the birthday card section, for daughters. A moderately tacky card showing a cake with candles, sliced to reveal layers in rainbow colors, On the front, a quote from that famous philosopher, Taylor Swift ; "When you are lucky enough to have something that makes you different from everybody else, don't ever change!" Inside "Happy birthday to my amazing daughter." Almost makes me wish my daughter were a lesbian so I could give her the card. (Actually given her recent taste in men, I've often wished she were a lesbian, but that's another story altogether.)

The haters are losing. Kindess and justice and decency are winning, if slowly.

Rockford has its first Gay-Lesbian-Transgernder-Transvestite Pride Festival yesterday. Gayle and I were asked by the Demo Chairperson to work in the Obama booth. However, I had already volunteered to wash and/or blow dry dogs at the big PAWS Humane Society Annual Dog Wash fundraiser, and to which Gayle took our dog, so we were force to miss it.

We read in the morning paper where six couples of various genders were wed.

The haters really lost decades ago. You don't see large scale hate or bigotry happening anywhere anymore. Those few you may see from time to time in the media with their hate posters are really a rarity. Do a personal poll. Most people really don't care who is doing what to who anymore and is an issue that will either finally consume itself like a dying fad, or disappear into obscurity for lack of social shock value. That is, if the media, and those who really need widespread examples of hate to validate their superior social ideologies would allow it to.

Yes the haters are losing but very slowly. Generally the hate has gone underground in behind closed doors but it's still there and just as destructive. Just the other day I was at a deli waiting for my order while I was listening to two parents discussing in a very destructive way, how they wished the schools didn't promote such tolerance and that the children bullying the "misfits" into conformity was a good thing; "they should just let them fight it out" they opined. The content of their conversation was shocking enough but not as shocking as the 10 kids they had sitting around them listening intently. Child abuse, a massive act of negligence and potentially criminal IMO; as we know how kids will often copy and act out their parents hate.

Oh, no doubt the card was designed purely to make money, and Target stocked it because they thought it would sell. Greeting cards are not generally instruments of social change; they follow rather than lead, and reflect the general culture pretty closely. That's my point.

In your world, perhaps. In the real world, mass market greeting cards are a very lagging indicator of market conditions. LGBT greeting cards have been available in LGBT bookstores since before LGBT was invented. They, of course, could not be considered mass market. They first appeared in porn bookstores back in the 60's. Gay porn, of course, was a very lucrative market for booksellers who didn't care what they carried, as long as it sold well enough to justify their limited shelf space and didn't bring down too much wrath from the local community. I did a booming business with this type of bookstore, when they discovered their porn-loving clients had other interests, and if they filled the front of their stores with general remainders, the community didn't notice the porn in back.

The widow that is 30 with a daughter had a car so i washed it and checked all the fluids.

To the point of the OP - I think that once you get below about 40 years old (maybe a bit younger in some places) the vast majority simply does not care about sexual orientation. Many older folks don't either.

I wasn't picking a fight at all. I was pointing out changes in society as reflected in greeting cards that I think are positive. When the mainstream opinion becomes the sentiments expressed on that card rather than the norm of 50 years ago, I think it is indeed a victory for kindness, justice and decency.
