The Ritchie RU-90 is nice. Perhaps better would be their kayak compass shown above that has a dumb compass around it. Both are in half-domes to provide magnificaiton, which might be an issue to you but you probably can't afford a flat top compass as they are only readable in larger sizes and tend to be pricy.

Comes with a nifty mount that you can put on a bulkhead or horizontal surface to use as as steering compass as well as a handheld. I have two such mounts on Hornpipe - one facing forward for use while rowing and another facing after for use while sailing

Seconded on the handheld with mounts. If you have ever done a coastal nav' course you'll know the benefits of the handheld over a fixed compass on a small boat, if you haven't you'll find it an interesting and worthwhile course to do.

thank you I like the idea of the hand held. i can remove it from the boat and use it in our skiff too.
