Default Master Mariner's Regatta in Port Townsend this weekend!

I am sailing down on Windsong on the morning's tide for the Master Mariner's Wooden Boat Regatta that is being held this weekend.

I plan to jump ship for Alcyone for Saturday's racing. . .

And return to Windsong for Sunday's race and Monday's sail back home. Anyone in the area of Port Townsend who would like to watch a whole passel of gorgeous wooden boats charging around the bay in a pack ought to come to town this weekend to see the spectacle.

    It's awesome!

Mostly found frequenting the littoral and estuarine zones in the southern half of the Salish Sea, though sightings have been recorded both north and south of this area, and occasionally, but rarely, inland, in freshwater environments. This species lives on micro-brewed beer and dutch-oven biscuits, and displays brightly colored nylon and gore-tex plumage during the rainy season. Approach with caution!

I'm stuck in the Northeast. 50 degrees with blowing rain. Bummer.

Have fun!!! One of these days I'll get out there!

A few pictures for the weekend so far:

Here's Windsong about to get into the middle of a scrum as they approach the downwind mark.

A buncha Six-Meters, a Rhodes Evergreen and a Yankee One-design in the foreground with some schooners and stuff out yonder, warming up for the first starting sequence.

I sailed on the Schooner Alcyone on Saturday. And -somebody- had to go aloft to unfurl the tops'l from it's stowage lashing. . . . Yep, that's me! What a great view of the fleet from up there!

It is an awful long way up, though. Fer gawd's sake, whatever you do, don't look down!

Sailing the schooner Alcyone was a lot of hard work, man! We ended up using 12 different sails in combinations with as many as 10 at one time. But it was definitely worth it for the glory of flying the square course, the raffee and an actual, honest-to-jeebus stuns'l on a downwind leg.
(Standing on the yard there puts one pretty much right at eye-level with the bridge of the ferry. The ferry captain came right on over to check it out--as if even he couldn't believe he was seeing a freaking stuns'l! Awesome!)

I was a shameless schooner slut all day, completely neglecting the boat that brought me in favor of a boat with bigger topsails. But can you really blame me? Just look at her!

I got some fun video while I was there to boot. Enjoy!

And another one from this morning sailing back home. Once again I jumped ship from Windsong and went sailing on another wooden boat since Vernon needed crew while Windsong had plenty on board. The weather was pretty much perfect for the regatta, but had socked back in late last night as you can see. This International One Design lives on Orcas Island.
