Question Silica with polyester or vinylester?

Jamestown is out of stock on system three, and it occurs to me that this particular repair doesn't NEED epoxy, ordinary old "boat resin" will do.

This might be a dumb question, but; does colloidal silica get along well with polyester or vinylester? I've never done that before.

    Thanks all

Are you using it as a filleting material, a glue or as a faring filler?

NO!... Those are not good adhesives. You are better off with TB3 or PL Premium or...better yet...Epoxy. Neither of those 'esters make good adhesives as they do not bond well to fully cured resins. If you need a small pack just for gluing then try Clark Craft... they have smaller test packs of 1:1 for not too much.

Give Joe Merton at Merton's Fiberglass in Springfield, MA a call. He'll have some System 3 for ya. Quick, efficient. (No benefit to me...)

I used to make engineering prototypes for R&D at Owens Corning Fiberglas. Used filled polyester occasionally where high strength wasn't needed because it was such a lousy adhesive. Made cleaning up squeeze out easy after it set because it didn't stick worth a darn.

This new ship here is fitted according to the reported increase of knowledge among mankind. Namely, she is cumbered end to end with bells and trumpets and clocks and wires. It has been told to me she can call voices out of the air or the waters to con the ship while her crew sleep. But sleep though lightly. It has not yet been told to me that the sea has ceased to be the sea.--Rudyard Kipling

As mentioned above, polyester resin makes bad glue. For that matter, it doesn't even make all that good a resin, other than for being cheap.
    Amphibious Macroplankton Oughtredia doublendus
Mostly found frequenting the littoral and estuarine zones in the southern half of the Salish Sea, though sightings have been recorded both north and south of this area, and occasionally, but rarely, inland, in freshwater environments. This species lives on micro-brewed beer and dutch-oven biscuits, and displays brightly colored nylon and gore-tex plumage during the rainy season. Approach with caution!

Had I gone forth with the original notion without asking the question, I would have been deterred by the evidence before long.

That's the old plywood core on the left, and the upside-down skin to be recored laying flat on the right.
The previous recorer had evidently used polyester. Only the brighter yellowish patch (near the middle of the far end) was still adhered.

On the bright side, the old core popped free with very little effort. I had anticipated hours of digging and scraping away, but it honestly took less than a minute. I think hot glue might have been more effective than the poly resin.
