Default an innovative (hopefully) taper crimp

I have 405g bullets with no crimp cannalure(sp) (for my 45-70) where it needs to be to feed through my tubular magazine... so, taper crimp... but no die

so about a quarter inch past contact in the 40-65 die does the trick… untested so far

You can make your own cannelure...

The Corbin Hand Cannelure Tool (HCT-1) creates precision cannelure grooves on straight-sided pistol cases or jacketed bullets. You can set both the position and the depth of the cannelure exactly. Two hardened, ground rollers form a V-way on which the bullet (or case) is rested, and a hardened tool steel embossing wheel is brought into contact with the other side of the bullet by lowering a large, expanded-neoprene covered grip and pressing down upon it while you turn a small crank one or two spins.

The result is a factory-perfect .050-inch wide serrated cannelure groove, placed exactly where you want it. The tool is designed for any caliber between .224 and .720 diameter in two ranges, from .22-.458, and from .375-.720. Within each range, it adjusts automatically for diameter of bullet. To change ranges, remove one e-clip and place a pivot pin in the alternate set of holes. That's all there is to it!

    Looks like it's about $150

most of my shooting is with cast bullets and I only use these to give the bore a wipe or two at the end of a shooting session. It makes it easier to clean the bore

So, you don't need to feed them through the tube magazine? If you single load them, you don't even need a crimp, right?

Any unwanted bulges in the case? I've tested loaded ammo for proper feeding and chambering at home. Just keep it pointed in a safe direction.

I didn't actually measure them but none were apparent
my test will be to load all 9 rounds in the mag and shoot it (yep, it holds nine rounds of 45-70 end to end... 26 inch barrel with full length mag)

Think I'm tracking with you brother. You don't have to load them in the tube magazine, but you want to. If you don't crimp them, and shoot 8 in a row, the 9th one is likely to come out of the tube as components... brass, bullet, and powder.

    Messy.

    They do make these...

...in 45-70. I know the picture says 308Win, but it's a generic picture.

Just kidding Phillip. SWMBO'd bought me a Marlin 444SS a few years back too. Still have it. I load Hornady 300gr bullets of a lot of H335 if I recall correctly. Makes a big muzzle flash in the evening light.
