    Default Obama in Afganistan

Just heard that President Obama flew to Afganistan in the wee hours of the morning. He'll be giving a speech there at 7:30PM eastern time about the one year anniversery of the killing of Bin Laden.
I can just hear the right screaming foul! I love it!

Gutsy to announce it ahead of time.

I remember cheney sneaking in and out under cover of darkness to and from his undisclosed locations under radio silence in unmarked planes. The man was fearless. Know what I mean?

I wonder if Afghanistan has a large prostitution industry. Probably not - that makes it one of the few countries that the Secret Service can go to where they can't further damage their reputation. Maybe that's why POTUS went there instead of Vegas for a campaign stump.

You don't believe the Commander in Chief should support the soldier in the field? If I was deployed I would find it a great honor to meet my CIC.

That's a bit lame SV, he's the C in C isn't he? Your head of state? Doing this stuff is part of the job that the office entails. Like the 'waste' entertaining foreign counterparts with bands and honour guards etc.

To give a speech, fly what, 16,000 miles with a full guard of secret service men.A waste in my mind. He's just trying to make points or headlines in the papers. Afghanistan does have TVs don't they?

Nobody minds opinions SV, it's the personal attacks that are out of place and frankly unnecessary. But then I'm not a US citizen and haven't a right to an opinion according to some. (That applies both ways BTW).

No, you're right. Too bad it wasn't announced ahead of time, and was in fact a "surprise" visit.

I don't see any retractions, or expect them.

I seem to remember Bush fils flying to Baghdad on Thanksgiving (unannounced) for a photo op of him "serving" the troops their Thanksgiving dinner. The picture was of him holding a platter with a big roast turkey. The turkey, natch, was inedible, since it had been tarted up for the camera by the food stylists — greased with motor oil and the like for the cameras. After the photo op, he flew back to DC and the grunts got their Thanksgiving dinner -- processed turkey loaf and wonder bread stuffing, topped with instant gravy, I'm sure, with canned cranberry sauce on the side.

The right, was, ecstatic, about this show of "support for the troops", IIRC. Funny that they're whining about Obama doing the same sort of thing.

Richard, why would you look forward to the 'right' screaming foul? In fact why would you lower yourself to even post something so biased and stupid?

Just curious. I am surprised ... to say the least with your assertion ... disappointed, really.

Oh ... and Obama got the job done? REALLY?

Actually, I disagree. Once we pay our taxes to the government, it is the government's money. That's fodder, I suppose, for a thread of its own.

Meanwhile, after we had Bush declare "MIssion Accomplished", take his eye of Bin Laden and Afghanistan, and leave Obama with two wars, both of which Bush used for political purposes, it's pretty insincere when they blame Obama for politicizing any of this.

Obama has the great problem of how to best end the war in Afghanistan. If he pulls our troops out tomorrow and a disaster there follows, YOU would be all over him for it. If he chooses to keep everything going forever, YOU would be all over him for it.

The man has limited options. He is taking the best of several bad choices.

Well, 7 people would still be alive today if Obama would have stayed home...

Just hours after President Barack Obama delivered his pre-dawn, prime time speech in Kabul marking the anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death and reaffirming his commitment to fulfill the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, at least two major explosions rocked the capital, killing seven.
The Taliban claimed credit for the attacks, which began with a suicide car bomb that went off near Jalalabad Road at 6 a.m. and was followed by a much larger explosion two hours later. Taliban leaders told media that they targeted Green Village, a heavily fortified compound home to many westerners including U.S. Department of Defense contractors.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told The Wall Street Journal that the attack was a direct response to Obama's visit.
"This delivers a message to President Obama that he is not welcome in Afghanistan," Mujahid said. "When he is in Afghanistan, we want him to hear the sound of explosions. Afghanistan does not want his imposed strategy."

It takes extensive planning and effort to get those car bombs built up and ready to go, so I'm not buying your argument or his.

Well, Brian, if you'd like more content of a different nature, maybe a good start would be for you to enlighten the 99.9% of us that have never set foot in Afghanistan or Iraq about what it's like to sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with the troops in a combat zone. I mean, since you can be pretty sure Nicholas and a whole host of others here have never had the pleasure of such an experience, and you apparently have, I'd bet there are others here that would find that interesting.

As far as "Bush haters" are concerned, some of us have damn good reasons to dislike what that man did while he was in office and more than a few of us see no real need to give him, his handlers or those who helped put him in office a pass for what a sorely misguided "leader" he was.

I'm sure the reverse will be true years after "That One" is gone from office.

    Is that better?
