    Default Butt Mortice Plane

Bought one years ago from Lee Valley but they stopped carrying them a few years later. I know a young man who is in the renovation business and after watching him set up to do a hinge mortice with a router, I told him he could have done the mortices for all tjree hinges with a chisel and the mortice plane quicker than the time it took him to set up for one mortice. He didn't believe me, so I brought out the plane and told him to try it. He did and was impressed at how quickly it went. Ever since then I have been looking for one and just found one on the LN website that is a look alike of the one I have but the price is $ 110 which I find a bit rich. Does anybody know of a cheaper supplier? These are not exactly high tech so there must be cheaper versional available.

I find the plane superior to a hand router because there is no issue with tipping.

Trouble with those is that there is not enough wood on the edge of a door for the router to be stable on. Not a problem with the plane pictured on the LN site.

OK..... That's a new one on me...... Never even heard of a butt mortis(c)e plane.
I've found that a 3/4"-1" chisel does an excellent job very quickly... Gotta be sandpaper sharp though...

A review of the completed listings of Ebay provides the name of T.S. Wheeler as an old marker of butt mortise planes. Hopefully this link works:

Another name of an old maker that I have came across in googling around is C.M. Rumbold. There is one for sale somewhere in OZ for about $300(!)

You may wish to keep an eye out on Ebay, you might get lucky.
