OK, nice lucid reasoned response. What happened in 71?
it's a jab at the paranoid gun clutching set
i've lived my entire life without the need of a gun for protection, most people do
on very rare occasions i'll admit to where one was or could have been handy but i see it as a numbers game and i see guns in the hands of most people as a societal detrement

I dunno...I'm beginning to like the "Concealed Baseball Bat" approach.
Besides, consider what it could do for a guy's social life if he had a baseball bat tucked in his pants. "Is that a baseball bat in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?"
Absurd. Ridiculous. Totally bogus. In a nation of some 97 million households, about half of
which own one or more firearms, is a rate of defensive gun use (DGU)
which amounts to about 1.4% per year an unreasonably high figure?
A study undertaken by a group led by criminologist Dr. Gary Kleck of
Florida State University found that there are approximately 2.1 to 2.5
million instances annually in which individual Americans use a gun to
defend themselves.
We've been through this before. Common sense alone would tell you that this can't possible be true. If it were, then every single one of us would be personally aware of numerous incidents of defensive gun use. Just compare the adult population numbers with the supposed number above and THINK about it. If the number were true, then every single America adult would be defending themselves with a gun at least once in their lifetimes, andeveryone you've known for 30-40 years would have defended themselves with a gun. If that isn't true, then it must mean that every gun owner OFTEN defends himself with a gun..... insane bulls$%t. I don't know a single person, nor have I EVEr known a single person, who has defended themselves with a gun.
This kind of stuff was spewed by John Lott years ago, and has been debunked many times..... the real number? Around 50,000 per year, about the same number as gun deaths. Do a little research on this, from an objective source.
I am NOT making this post with ANY sort of anti-gun agenda.... I'm not opposed to gun ownershipe for self defense, at all. I'm posting it because I really HATE it when hyperbole is used to try to make a point.

If even the lower figure of "2.1 million" defensive gun uses were accurate, then as Australia has a population 1/15 of the US, we should have 1/15 the number of defensive gun uses i.e 140,000 per year. Since we don't carry guns for self defence, those non occurring defensive uses should be an extra 140,000 deaths or serious injuries a year, or 383 extra deaths or serious injuries a DAY.
But we don't. We don't even have that many murders in a year.
It's s lie.

Wonder what direction this conversation would have gone if the unknown permit holder turned out to be an off duty police officer?
This morning I shot a Gopher that was attacking my wife's Bougainvillea
He was eating the Bougainvillea, not Skittles
