Default Help me, WBF logicians, theologians, hostage negotiators and card-sharps!

Could you read this, because I can't understand it.

    http://canterbury.eqc.govt.nz/news/w...burb-by-suburb

This is the announcement about the drilling for geo-technical testing that is required before a rebuild can begin on our (and many others) land. It appears to tell me one thing, tests have begun in one suburb.

    But what's the rest mean?

There's no real time frame or any indication of which suburb is next.

Anybody here good at interpreting the arcane?

No problems at all interpreting. I don't want to make my explanation long-winded... so I'll simply summarize: you're stuffed!

Seriously... they're saying that the whole shebang will be complete in 6-9 months, and the sequence will be as printed in the list: North New Brighton is underway; Aranui is next; then New Bright; followed by Parklands; etc.

I didn't read further to see if they break it down more precisely, but I doubt it. They just say - stay tuned for updates.

Nope, that's (my understanding) the first bit (and that list includes one suburb that I don't think of as Eastern) and we're in the second list.

    Fair effort, have another try.

A wooden stake will be placed in the area where drilling will be undertaken.
It is imperative that you do not remove the wooden stake

    Seanz, I'd be moving.

"Our field staff will reinstate your property either on the day or within three weeks of drilling. Photos taken before drilling will be referred to when ensuring your property is left in its original state."

    "Original" being pre-quake,I'd assume?

    You assume too much.....

The "within three weeks" is a laugh. If it doesn't happen on the day, it's not going to happen.

I suspect it's a massive, covert land-stabilization project. They're staking down 9000 properties to stop Christchurch sliding into the sea.

    I thought you were OK.

Im sorry i never read the NZ quake thread but to be fair never read the OZ politics one either.

However never missed most all your threads..

I usually move wood stakes to be impish but probably not a good joke here.

I'm just a simple truck-driver with poor reading comprehension, perhaps you could help me, kind sir?

Bobbys, house isn't too bad to live in (it was warmer when it had chimneys and we could light a fire) but is a write-off. We'll demolish and rebuild here.....eventually.

It doesn't do to blame "Poor reading comprehension" on truck driving - deafness however.....

    Folks,

This is actually something I have a bit of experience with. They will be either pushing an instrumented sharp rod http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bzw4pXzrbM (The cone penetration test or CPT) or drilling a larger hole and taking soil samples http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fml7LWA809U

In either case, the intent is to track changes that the earthquake made to the soils to determine if the site is still safe to build on.

And, yes, push to have the holes backfilled the day of testing. The process can be too easily forgotten later.....

    What?

Nice link. See the bulbous bit on the East of the South Island (Banks Peninsula)? That's just South of us. So we're on recent (comparatively) land that butts up to an older (volcanic) bit of land. Problems may occur.

Thanks for your reply Draketail. It's not the drilling that's the issue (our land is as good as the land next door that doesn't need testing), it's the gibberish in the linked website. They're deliberately not telling us what's going on in the second list of areas.......or so it seems.

Perhaps it is the authorities themselves that do not know precisely what is going on, and therefore are not tell you; not an uncommon occurrence in a bureaucracy, especially one shaken by disaster. Is there any geographical or other linkage that would necessitate, or make more efficient, the concurrent testing proposed on the second list? Perhaps you could be elucidated if you made a phone call.

I read that notice as saying the doubled list will follow the singled list, ie. Burwood & Redcliffs will start simultaneously, following the completion of Wainoni. But... they don't make that explicit, do they? Since it seems to matter to you, it just might be worth a phone call to clarify.

Oh, and by the way, I do happen to own 70 acres in the Marcellus Shale natural gas exploration area in upstate New York. PM me if you'd like to invest in a lifetime income. At my age it doesn't seem like a good idea to wait for the ship to come in.
(And while you're waiting to get rich, The property is a beautiful Adirondack forested area, within sight of the lights of two ski areas, and is bounded by Forever Wild land on three sides...)

It states its imperative you do not remove the stakes but it says nothing about writing cuss words on them.

We need clear, concise thinking here, people. Does anybody really believe that phoning the organization responsible for that vague as a butterfly statement would actually result in some clarity?

    Right back at ya PD.

bobbys, I'm not writing cuss-words (the contractors are usually good people and they're doing something) on stakes but I won't rule out carving a pentagram or runes.

The calls are handled by the agency (EQC) in NZ but the operators often aren't as up to date as we are.
