Default HMS Bounty visits St. Augustine, FL

It's big. You can at least say that about her. But the romantic notions I had about the ship were pretty much dashed when I saw it and heard those big fuel-hungry diesels rumbling as she chugged her way into the bay. Still we don't many tall ships in town so the Bridge of Lions had hundreds of people on it to welcome her to the city and we all clapped our hands and cheered as she cleared the bridge. It was kind of fun.

Sailed on her off Tahiti way back when she was first doing tourist trips. I remember standing beside the helm on a full moon night with a warm breeze. Got to be 20 years ago? Only a short trip, all I could afford so I hardly slept at all. I'd forgotten about it too.

Ken- Sorry I missed you. Landon and I were on the island side of the bridge watching her come in. She is pretty darn big. The schooner, Freedom, looked small beside her. And the Raven- well she looked ridiculous. You can see the masts from many blocks away on King Street. Reproduction, yes. Gimmicky, I guess. Still pretty cool to see those masts so high in the air.

A different Bounty, I think, that one from the 84 film is now in Hong Kong.

Right - this is the Bounty that was made in '61 or so for the Brando movie, and the hull is all puffed up so they could fit lights and cameras inside. It was built as a throw-away, but somehow she still floats. Go below and examine things and you'll find fake this and fake that -- movie set stuff. Even the woodgrain on the doors is (or was when I was shown around about 8 years ago) just painted on. But it is big, no question about that. Those diesels, by the way, drive electric motors which in turn run the props. That part is very state-of-the-art.

There was no pretense of sailing at all. I wonder if she ever sails or even can. The website associated with the ship made it sound as if she were an accurate replica.

Lieutenant Bligh wasn't as bad as history makes him to be. He only had two men flogged during his career.

Bit of trivia. About 30 years ago two men ended up working on a B.C. ferry that runs from the mainland to Vancouver Island. (and back) One was a direct desendant of Bill Bligh and the other a direct desendant of Fletcher Christian. ( One could really see the native blood in the latter.)

I had no idea. The last time I saw her on the Chesapeake was in 1985, or so.
