Default Classic Boat Price Guide Debuts

Hagerty Insurance Agency announced a new online resource center to help classic boat owners more effectively determine the value of their vessels and understand the vintage marine marketplace.

The Classic Boat Price Guide was compiled by valuation experts, utilizing a number of sources, including private sales, auction data, insured values and contributions from classic boat dealers.

Values and additional information, such as production numbers and body type, are broken down into marque-specific sections, including Chris-Craft, Century, Gar Wood, Lyman and Riva, and others.

Perfect! Now I can determine and justify a reasonable asking price for the old family Lyman that I've been charged to sell.

Nice effort, and perhaps it will fill out with time, but it is very incomplete at the moment; too much so to really reflect the market at this time. Not a lick of cruisers or sailboats; it's seemingly a re-listing of recent Mecum auction results. That's a decent starting point, but hardly a complete guide.

It's noteworthy that the prices assume the boats include trailers....

There are a number of "blue books" for yachts that are available on paid subscription. Most surveyors subscribe to one or more of these.

I would think gauging the prices of "thinly traded" older models leaves too many variables.

That's true but valuing our kind of boats is hard to do out of a blue book. I expect the benefit derived from commercial publications is geared towards modern production. Selling classic wooden boats is a very individual event. With the market for big boats being so slow and depressed, the task of making a comprehensive blue book gets harder.

This is not to decry the Haggerty effort. In fact, I think it's a positive expression of support. It's just not fully cooked yet. I have thought for years that someday there would be an awakening to the value of classic yachts and while it has happened to a greater degree overseas, Americans just don't seem to have the bug yet. Pity. We were a nation of superior builders with a very honored tradition but our cruising craft go begging.

About a month ago I sold my 23 ft. Chris Craft Sea Skiff that was insured thru Haggerty. When I called cancel my insurance policy with them, they asked me a series of questions concerning price, condition, options, etc. They told me they were using this info. to develope a price guide. So this is where at least some of the data is coming from.
