Many years ago, I went around to every tire shop in my area and collected hundreds of pounds of used tire weights. Put them in zip-lock freezer bags and stuffed them in the bilge as interior ballast. It was the easiest thing to do after my wife refused to let me use the barbaque grill to melt the lead. She was talking some nonsense about lead poisoning or something... Women!

Now I don't feel so bad about having a few sets of unused plans for boats I changed my mind about building sitting on the shelf.

Unless you are building one of those two boats and were planning to pay a foundry to mold and cast your keel, I'd think his price is a bit high. Short of needing just exactly that keel, it's just a lump of scrap lead. I'm afraid he's got a white elephant on his hands... not to mention that there's probably some eco-fascist environmental regulation out there that requires him to have a high priced licensee to sell "hazardous materials." If he were in California, he'd have to post a state-mandated sign that what he's trying to sell causes cancer in rats.
