It's in the forum rules...the website owner has a classified section in it's magizene. This has been debated a few times, allowing section for ads.

No bad thoughts, I was just letting you know about our host's rules, so there would be no surprises. Hell, I might see about getting this lumber for myself!

That would be the wood that rots so readily when used as planking on the 37 egg harbors, right? why not just use african mahogany (khaya) and fix the problem?

wow, speaking of 37 egg my friend just picked up a 1963 38 SF but its a Picnic style, havnt seen a picnic before in that model, boat looks great we'll be doing top side and bridge over maybe starting nxt week, and I just picked up a 66 36' Pacemaker in a wee bit lesser shape, so I may be picking your gray matter here if you dont mind Thad, So with these Egg's, was that some of there problem using Philippine over the African??

Eggs were originally planked white cedar over white oak. at some point early in the 60's the supply of white oak in south Jersey got tight, so they started framing and keeling out of red oak. at some point around that time they decided it would be financially more responsible to plank in "philapine Mahogany" rather than jersey cedar. At that point, the Quality of the eggs went down fast. If you talk to the boat yard guys that were active in the 60's, you will find that the new wood used by egg demanded work be done within a few years of being built.

In college I worked for a guy that was a joiner at the egg harbor factory in the 60's. I later owned a 37 and have worked on several 37's and a larger one.... a 48 of the same era and also a mess.

When replacing planking on the 37's I worked on, I simply used jersey cedar. if using mahogany was important to someone, khaya would be the stuff to use.

The only picnic style I have seen had the original cedar planking...

very cool info thanks, we were thing of purchacing the 1967 43' egg and he still might, needs some work, what dosnt from that era still living, but real nice. 12.9 is the price, I may get back to you on that, the picnic I believe is going to pick up today or tomorrow if it has one type of planking does it matter if I change? will the different densities matter? Maybe its best If I start a new thread,,

For those of you who do not trust Philippine mahogony for planking, bear in mind that there are two kinds, Tangile and Luan. Tangile is hard, pinkish red in color, rot resistant and usually a bitch to plane as it has unruly grain patterns that can run in both directions in the same plank. The other, Luan, is much softer, weighs less than Tangile and is almost white in color. It has low rot resistance but is easier to plane than Tangile. I would not bother working with Luan as it will surely end up causing problems by developing pocket rot around fastenings and in buried seams.

so how about from the Cabinet side of things? if it will it hold up in a marine environment to the less rigors of interior cabinets and doors, I could use some of this for interior and non wet environments ? trims and so forth? thats pretty much what I had in mind to begin with,,,

It'd have to be better than the veneered MDF that you see some of the commercial boat builders using for interior fitouts these days.

Guys, just remember that while our hosts provide this forum as a free service, they are able to do so by running a succesful commercial operation that includes selling advertising space in their magazine and classifieds sections. Please don't disrespect that by ignoring their fairly lenient expectations/rules that you agreed to when you signed up to and were accepted by our hosts to this forum.

Luan is ok for cabinetry. However it has a very uninteresting grain pattern. If you wish to call it mahogany, it is actually a member of the cedar family, stain it red and call it mahogany. Otherwise do not stain it red and do not call it mahogany.

I know of a 30 footer looking to be adopted, Its a real fine girl needs a bit work naturaly, Its also in Nj I was thinking of checking her out. I tried googleing for Marblehead boats but mainly come up with wrong answers, not boats builders
