Sjogin was an easy sell... all I did was recognize a masterpiece and share my passion which meant I posted lots pics to promote her beauty and visual grace. I started a general thread to see if enough initial interest was there. Next, I talked to a few designers including Paul Gartside, John Brooks, John Welsford, and Francois Vivier.... all which either wanted too much of a guarantee up front, or were too busy for the next couple of years. Finally I called Paul back one day to discuss the possibilities.. and I was pleasantly surprised when he committed to doing the basic work with a committment of at least 10 guys to $200 each. I immediately posted this opportunity on the forum and within a week had ten committed participants... ending up over the next few months with close to 20 people.

Paul allowed anyone to get into this deal for the initial $200 until a reasonable time where he would add her to his stock plans library and the cost would go up to $350. This project worked out great and a fantastic design was documented for the future with the work of Russ and some friends taking off the lines and many other measurements and providing this information to Paul. Paul also provided a detail procedure with diagrams on taking off the lines which I'm sure all interested parties kept for future reference. This was a "win", 'win" deal for all involved and I'm sure the "Woodenboat Gods" were smiling. I cannot thank Paul Gartside enough for his involvement in this project.

As Sjogin was a 22 footer with a keel, she would require a slip and slip fee... long term... and I knew a smaller trailerable version (open boat) would have the possibility of even more interested parties. I suggested this to Paul and he agreed to go ahead with the same deal.

I immediately started another thread on a "smaller Sjogin" ... trailerable with a 500# ballast shoe and had 8 guys committed within a few weeks. Paul scheduled the work based on that figuring more interest would be generated overtime. Interestingly enough, by the time Paul was ready to start the project, he was in also trying to complete his bi-monthly design for Watercraft Magazine.. and he suggested to me to change the deal... that the participants in the smaller Sjotin project could have the plans as pdf files for $50 when they were published in April 2012. All 8 of the committed participants actually came out great and got the plans for $50 instead of $200. I'm sure with the publication of the smaller Sjogin... "Sjogin III", in Watercraft Mazazine, that many more will take advantage of such a great little design. This was a very generous offer by Paul to accommodate the interest in this lovely design and I'm sure most here will join me in thanking Paul again for such a cooperative spirit.

The original Sjogin came with three ways to build the hull, (traditional lapstrake, glued ply lapstrake, and strip planked) with four sail plans (Bermuda, Gaff tops'l sloop, gaff yawl, Bermuda yawl). Sjogin III allows for three hull consturction methods (strip, cold molded, and glued ply lap). The sail plan for Sjogin III is a gaff tops'l sloop. If enough interest is generated I'm sure Paul would draw up another sail plan., although I think it would be a better approach for a few guys to offer a fair amount to Paul for his time to draw up the plan.

I most likely will build Sjogin III and am looking forward to seeing several of these boats built.

I want to step in here to thank you, Matt, Scott and all you boat struck folks in Brooklin who support so well our myriad dreams. I certainly couldn't have imagined Sjogin's sister ships hove to off some backwater, not a mile from her harbor as I do today, without your help. (Or at least with Paul's plans on the walls of her lovers.)

And now, thanks to Rod Brink's vision and persistance, we have an already loved design from the hand of one of our generations' masters. Thank you Paul for taking my stab at documenting Sjogin's dimensions and creating something very special.
