    Default Applewood knees source

So I've been trying to locate some applewood knees for my first build an finally found a source.
The gent tells me that he has a few apple tree stumps but no "trunk to branch" pieces...
I've heard that "trunk to roots" pieces can be used for knees with some tree types but what about apple? Same same?

Yes that works fine. Be very careful of rocks included in the apple roots though!!!!!

Tree to root may include a graft line, which you may not want.
I got some very nice apple logs up in Willits which were easy enough to slab with a chainsaw. There must be orchards near you somewhere..... See if they'll put some thinnings aside for you.

Apple trees are often grafted to hardy root stock. IE: A Northern Spy apple tree may be a Northern Spy scion grafted to a Macintosh root stock. Where the two woods meet is called a graft line. It's often very attractive, wild grain, with lots of action and color, but it may not be very strong structurally. I don't know for sure one way or the other, but I think it'd be worth asking someone who knows, before you build a boat out of it.

What sizes and how many are you looking for. I just had an old apple tree blow down in my yard, if I think I can get what you need I will band saw them to a rough sizing for shipping.

The apple wood that you are looking for is from big old trees that i would assume predate grafting trees commonly...

Not to incite thread drift.... But..... Apple trees have been being grafted for centuries.

    Ted,

Where are you located? If the thread starter doesn't want your potential knees I might be close enough in Maine to pick them up. B

I have used Black Walnut crotches for breast hooks and knees... they are lovely and it is plentiful in the bay area.
