    Default Rowing machines on TITANIC

The first ones I ever used were oil-damped ones just like these in the attic of the school's cow barn reached only by climbing a steep, wobbly ladder. Messy, unevenly calibrated, but quiet and redolent with tradition.

Is the post that the "oar" attaches to pretty much like a lever arm shock on an older car?

What is the fellow in the background sitting on?

Looks like a saddle, riding machine? Horses were still common in 1912 and most 1st class passengers would have been horsemen. (I presume this was the 1st class male gym).
