    Default Deer Miss Spin Drift

Im writing you today for your advice. Seems the neighbor pulled up in a brand new Toyota 4wd double cab pickup.

Of course I was nice and complemented him on such a fine truck.

However inside i was calling him bad names because my truck is from the 80s and the tailgate just fell off due to rust.

He is a show off and obnoxious.

    My question to you is.

Is this a character flaw the lies in me and exsposes my dark side?.

    Yam i Jeolous?.

Does he do this on porpose to annoy me and show off?.

Any advice would be apprecatied, Your the only one i can turn to here in my dark hour. PS It

s white like he thinks he is a good guy or something.

    Dear bobbys,

You have a condition commonly known as "Why-Do-I-Drive-A-Piece-Of-Crap-While-Everybody-Else-Has-Cool-Wheels", or "WDIDAPOCWEEHCW"...a long acronym to be sure, but appropriate.

A technical explanation is beyond the scope of our discussion, so I will fast-forward to my recommendation:

Duct tape and spray paint will fix that tailgate right up, and then your truck will become a classic vehicle from the 1980's--an iconic piece of automotive history, evocative of a simpler, big-haired time in our history.

Remember, it isn't rust--when you own a classic the corrosion is now called "patina", and it is very desirable and trendy. Just the thing for a roofer with big dreams and Jersey charm.

I am a bit hurt that you didn't come to me first...Spin is a fine, upstanding member of the forum, but she won't active until spring comes to Alaska--probably around August...

    Your friend,

    Jeff C

P.S. - Glen is really hurt...he considers himself to be your BFF, and you've ruthlessly cast him aside on this one...

Oh - the tailgate: Tear the whole bed off & build a really cool wood bed. Then the neighbor will be jealous.

bobbys, the trick is to make your neighbour ashamed of his overt consumerism. That you are into conservation (your classic truck), recycling (the same) and the health of the planet. Anyhow keeping up with the neighbours is an unwinnable game, taking the principled line and refusing to participate in such gross consumption as a new truck can be very frustrating for your show off neighbour. Courage bobbys.

    bs, you scoundrel --

I know what you're thinking... and too embarrassed to mention to Ms. Drift.

Do NOT go out after dark and flatten all 4 of his fancy new, shiny black, tires.

Or... if you can't restrain yourself... stop after the first time. Do NOT continue to do so at random intervals, until he calls in the police and/or his head explodes.

And NO! That does not mean you can slim-jim the door and pack the cab with crabshells and blackjack. I know how you think. Just let it go. I know you can do it <G>

Ask your neighbor to bet you one hundred dollars that he cannot stand or hop on his tailgate without destroying it ... he will jump up there IMMEDIATELY to prove you wrong ... sit back and relax ...

The Tundra tailgate is NOT structurally load-supporting ... which makes is useless for a truck used for work! At 210lbs I plopped down on one two years back and creased it enough that it had trouble closing again ...

Unless that has changed, they are junk for real work.

Bobbys, you must learn to look on the bright side of circumstances. Consider for example that your truck is now immune to hail damage--
the hail can fall harmlessly through the rust holes.

While considering the bright side of life you might also notice that your neighbor’s vehicle is likely to suffer in a hail storm as it is peened into a characturer of a dimpled golf ball.

Bobbys, yer just being self centered and selfesh. I have learned that doing good things for others helps us to forget our problems and focus our energies by doing good.

Now everybody who lives the Oregon coast knows that a shiney new pickup will only bring derision on the new owner when driving on a beach or up some gravel bar reaching a good steelie hole. In fact everyone will make fun of an idiot that drives a brand new pickup in those conditions. So approach your neighbor and offer to help him not be an idiot--or even suffer the consequences of one even if he's not-- offer to help him whip that nice new shiney, insult attracting, ostentatious POS into a real fishing, boat launching, elk hauling truck it could--no, should-- be. Offer to bring a baseball bat and a bucket of salty sand if the neighbor doesn't have them. In ten or fifteen minutes of unselfesh attention, you can turn that Toyota into a real Oregon beach truck. And best of all. you're helping out a neighbor! In no time you'll forget your troubles and will have a warm fuzzy felling inside.

In fact you might even start without him, knowing how much he'll appreciate your concerning neighborliness. Neighborly love--the world sure could use more of it.

You seem to be trying to lose poor bobbys some money. Even if what you said about Tundra tailgates is true... it might be a Tacoma.

And... of course... you could have been wrong about the Tundra too. I know my '05 Tundra has carried over 1/2 ton of sheet goods, both with the gate down, and with it up. It has carried more lumber than that on roof racks, as well. It has withstood multiple loadings and unloadings of the Portable Pizza oven (about 700# - see the "Favorite Pizza" thread). It seems to have no problem with me (@225#) standing & jumping on the gate when down. As a 'real' work truck... it works great for me. Now... if you have any suggestions about gas mileage - I'm all ears. Why won't the manufacturers bring their nifty diesel rigs over from Europe and Japan?

Your Tundra is too old to have the weak tailgate ... and I do agree that they should bring over some diesel systems for these trucks ... but Americans are not, yet, totally enamoured with diesel ... YET!!!

Again, your 2005 is a better truck than what they produced even a couple of years ago ... enjoy it.

And the 'death shake' at highway speeds ... but I am talking about model years 2009-2011, IIRC from my studies of them ...

I know there's a 48-hour period in August somewhere when you can take off the mittens...not sure of the date, though.

Prices on diesel LR's here in the States are absolutely stoopid. Because they've all been grey-marketed or brought in with (shall we say) "different" VIN's, they are quite rare. Even a single cab 130 diesel in good shape (aka something left of the frame) would sell for $20,000+. Couple of years ago I delivered a 2 year old 110 TDI (that was admittedly cherry) to a guy who paid $65,000 for it.

Heck, a decent Series Diesel can bring over 10,000.....

Buy a gas one? No 130's sold here. The 110's are the biggest we get & only come as 5 doors. The V8's get 12MPG on a really good day.

Even i yam not that crazy but he may have thought when i turned my lawnmower around in the gravel and a rock spun off and hit him i did it on purpose. I did not but laughed and that was a mistake

I do not know what that is, You do not see Land Rovers here much, My dream is a Toyota land cruiser with the diesel.

My friend has a gas one, 6cly with a 3speed.

Our Aussie friend sez the 3 speed is the best one.

Once in awhile people import them from Canada and some people put in the diesels.

But speaking of gravel the other neighbor has one of those mental problems and rakes the gravel 4 hours a day to get it just right, Nice person but i do not step on their gravel.

It does get annoying hearing a rake over gravel for hours.

Actually - they were made with diesels, but none were brought to the states. Standard "we never get diesels" routine. There's a 73 LC down the street for sale that I am purposely not checking, as it might be within the realm of possibility & I don't need it....

    .

There was a company in Seattle importing them from Australia with the Diesels.

With gas prices now a Gas LC would not be very economical..
