Well, lets see how Paul responds.

He's a "worm in hot ashes" kinda guy.

Back to 600 yards today and i didn't fare quite so well. First round i dropped back to 39, but I was also first to shoot with the club rifle today and the guy that was coaching me seemed to be mesing around with my sights quite a lot for my first 7 shots (including my two sighting shots, the first of which went well high of the target). I watched him lower the sights from Saturdays 1000 yard setting prior to me shooting but it seems he didn't get it quite right. Shots 6,7,8, and 10 were all bulls (fives) with 6 and 10 being "V"'s, shot 9 was a 4.

Second round was a little better when I was left alone to adjust my own sights, with a respectable 45, including another four bulls but only one of those a "V".

See? Now this is where I draw the line! I mean, ya can't keep every whacko in the world from getting a gun, but if you've got a known psychiatric condition that has you confined to a straight jacket, perhaps you shouldn't be allowed to have a gun.....

When you score close to a possible, why are they messing with your sights?

No doubt it's the illuminati, or some other such group. Give it a miss, and assume that your are at least a small god.

I prefer not to mess with them but because I have had to have a coach the last two shoots, being a visitor, they adjusted the sights according to the variations in the wind between each shot, until I spoke up anyway. I've always simply zero'd my sights and adjusted my aim as breeze or distance dictates when hunting or only adjusted the elevation on my 303 peep sights on a target range.

Bob may be able to advise but I gather you are more likely to ensure a consistant score over these longer ranges by learning to read the wind/mirages and how to adjust the sights accordingly.

If you are gonna use that particular rifle, then record your zeroes with it. The number of clicks from the bottom is best if there's a chance some other shooter will slip the knobs or index plates. Then there won't be a need for your "coach" to run your sight down from 1000 to 600 so as not to hold up the firing line.

One feature about long-range is it will raise your skill levels across the board because of improvements to your sense of sight alignment and motor memory for breaking clean shots. Plus looking at yard lines and splitting distances will improve your range estimation skills. All you need to add to it is some time on a military sniper range shooting at steel plates in natural terrain. You may even surprise yourself by consistently knocking empty shotgun shells off a board at 25 yards with a large-caliber pistol...without spending time at pistol practice.

Head-to-head competition with others in your skill class over a nice pot of entry and sponsor fees is just the thing for when out-thinking ruminants ceases to be a challenge, or you want to take killing out of the equation.

Thanks Bob. And yes, I had enough of killing 20 years ago so I'll be sticking with targets.

I've started recording my shots but hadn't thought to record the zeros on the sights. I also need to confirm the number of clicks per minute on the weapon that I use, I think that may have been what confused the coach on Thursday.

To answer the soon to be punted one, nothing to do with wood boats. This is the Bilge section folks talk about whatever here. Epic introduction. LOL
