Default Wizbang MK 2 new build

Time to get a building the new 2 cycle devil boat.
I have 2 , 25hp mercs. One is a short shaft and one is long. I had used the shorty on the earlier boat, but as it has been underwater, um, twice, I will use the long shaft with this new boat.
The plan is to make the transom 6" higher and the "breakaway wings" longer. This will give me room to stuff some foam back there, and might let me put a reverse sheer on her. The short shaft used to take a dunking every time the boat slowed down anyway.
The actual bottom , the part in the water @ 30mph, will be the same.
5 feet of 3/8 meranti and 8 feet of quarter inch meranti scarphed together.
Here is the model, taken apart ,of the old boat.I will use occume ply for the sides and deck ,6mm and 4mm, and alaska cedar instead of khaya for stringers, to save weight.

Deja Voodoo. When this bit of west and 403 kick off, I will draw up the rocker and bow. The transom is 10 inches wider in addition to 6" taller. I built a flatbed of two by fours on the trailer. Make life a lil easier. The first boat was built in 60 hours time, but I may just mosey along a bit slower with this one, which I may call BINGO!

I think we need a good picture of MK 1, not the one of her upside down on the beach. And I need to mark this thread. / Jim

"Bingo" is confidence. Oddly, I was imagining you driving to destruction in order to build the next one better. LOL

here Ya go Jim, In better days. When Wizbang was brand new, she carried a 40 merc. This was over the top fast. One can see how the short shaft put the mill right into the sea.

Wait a sec. 2 25 hp Merc's? Why not build a dual level transom & put the longshaft on one side & the short on the other? If 40HP was overpowered, 50 should be just right!

The bottom forward two thirds is quarter inch, back by the engine is three eights ply. This bend is not easy, or fast. Take it a bit at a time. It's a 6 pack bend. And you can see some fracturating. The bow will be planed down a few inches, NOT with a stinking hand tool.( heh heh).
Remember, this type of building is "floppy". There is no strong back. Only a few chunks of lead and some strings. That said, a speed boat is not a sailboat. In other words, when this boat is "going" , only 8" of it is in the water. If the bow wags off a bit., no big ting, cuz it is a foot out of the water. A sailboat? One would have to slow WAY down in the building to make her straight. Unless You want to sail, literary, "around " the world.

    Hi John,
The "wings" act as both "breakaway" chines, that they let go , or, come out of the water, at high speed, allowing the boat to go faster when going FAST while straight. The beam of the transom is 68" but when she is "broken out" there is only 48" in the water. Boat has to be light though.
Also, they carry a deeper v, (deadrise, but you know what deadrise is),than the center of the hull, and soften the edges , acting as non trip chines, which make the boat safer in high speed cornering. They do not "dig in" , non trip chines do the opposite, they let go of the water. A "Hard" hard chine can suddenly "bite" when cornering and at the very least , slam the occupants against the side, or just plain ol flip the boat. Most of these ol style runabouts would have a little fin or two, I find a fin to steal a little speed. So this boat will do a lot of sliding around, but quickly!
Each one of these I build, the breakaway chine is a bit more extreme. No computer modeling here, that is for sure, just seat of the pants experience.I mean experimenting.

Many deep V powerboat hulls have a similar chine setup; perhaps not the same geometry, but the principle of reduced resistance is the same. Boats by Ray Hunt, Lou Codega and Martin Peter's come to mind. Were you to see a Hunt Surhunter or a Regulator, for some examples I have first-hand knowledge of, the chines are mostly flying high of the W/L even at rest. Some static stability is sacrificed since they have to heel a bit more before hitting the chine, but resistance is reduced and spray deflection retained.

The usual way, well, my usual way is to throw money at them until I am happy.
I spent several grand on wheels for my Aristo Craft, including eight hundred bux on a custom cleaver.
The stock wheel on the "Classic 25" is 13 inches, pitch of course. That is fine for a 13'whaler to go 30 mph, but it will be" stuck in 2nd gear" for this boat.
Wizbang has, on the other motor, a 15" SS wheel with a sexy name , I will start with that.
There is more to it than just reading the tach, there is also load, trim and jack(height) to be fine tuned. Oh, and moving the engine fore n aft a few inches,(with wedges and paint stir sticks).
The cleaver props, (surface piercing) are fast but dangerous, VERY slow to get out of the hole, making the small boat dangerous in the vicinity of waves or wakes.
The power trim bracket MAKES the boat. She is not very safe without it. When it occasionally fails, I turn and limp straight home.
But no kidding, the last 3mph are the most "spensive!!!
