Yes, I remember her looking hogged, and having old, blown-out sails. I'm glad someone was able to rescue the old girl.

I'm still experimenting with trying to improve image quality without much luck. Even stopping it way down, there is still the simple math problem of not enough pixels to crop down this much. I'll keep trying to squeeze more from this old 4 megapixel Olympus. In the meantime, a couple more workboats.

The top photo is the SES Propeller, my daughter's Sea Scout boat. She's a Korean War era Army T-Boat and she still has some of her armor plating. I have spent a lot of time aboard her.

What model Olympus and which lens? Without spending much you might find a cheap tele or tele-converter. Your basic system of remote release and focusing seems to be working quite well. Great thread!

It's the old Olympus E-10 with the Olympus 9 - 36mm (35 - 140mm 35mm equivalent) lens. I have it zoomed to about 20mm (near mid-range) to allow me to capture the full amount of the canal that I can see between buildings from my window. I have to leave it at that fairly wide FOV or I'll miss boats or parts of boats in their travel. Then by the time I crop down to just a small boat, I am sometimes using only about 400 - 500 of the 2240 horizontal pixels recorded. If I were hand-holding for each shot, I would zoom into and follow the boat. But even with work a bit slow, I can't stand there all day hand-holding a camera. Yes, the AC adapter and mirror for the RF trigger are working great. But it has me thinking about looking for a better camera, even a used one would be better than this one, but not a real financial high priority right now.

If you buy one with remote trigger capability, and a probably-existing-camera-utility hunk of software, you could just put it online, and let other people look out your window and take the pics... If everyone chipped in $2, that might cover it. (6000+ views on thread... not unique views, of course.) Chip

Island Chief, one of the regulars. This guy pushes a barge, sometimes two, of sand and gravel thru the Locks just about every day. I assume they are going to make concrete up at Kenmore at the North end of Lake Washington.

When on the Propeller, which you showed today, last summer at night, this barge or one like it filled the Montlake Cut. We were idling waiting for the barge come out. A big party yacht was steaming toward it, seemingly oblivious. We had to hit 5 blasts on the whistle and use the loudhailer to get the attention of the yacht captain. He or she then came to an abrupt stop and backed the hell out of the way.

The gravel barges are very hard to see at night.

I see that very same tug up at the north end of Lake Washington pretty consistently.

    From flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lgevans...n/photostream/):

The county's 48-foot research vessel that is used to conduct various saltwater projects on Puget Sound.
"Liberty's" homeport is the King County Environmental Laboratory in Fremont. The lab provides quality field services, laboratory, information technology services and advisory services in support of King County and other publicly-sponsored programs that protect and enhance water quality.

And here I was gonna say that we have to be careful with the "R" word around here.

Red Jacket does look better w/out the dodger, but I bet it's nice in a blow.

Ocean Titan was just messing about when I came around West Point today. There was a bunch of kayaks and other boats out there and he was just spinning around and weaving backwards all around them. Here he is running backwards at a good clip. Heading back in I suppose.

I would have liked to. Unfortunately, the tow boat wasnt having as much fun as we were! The good news is I'm your new neighbor at Shilshole and I have a pre-paid round trip at Seaview to fix that stuffing box once and for all here soon. I've just been too chicken to actually fix it right while still in the water. If something were to go wrong and Elliott Bay Marina being so far away from an emergency haulout and all.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a person lift for getting people aboard who normally have to use a wheelchair, etc.

Canadian Navy "Glen" class tug. We have 5 of them, probably 2 Westcoast and 3 East. Roughly 95' by 30' beam, about 250 tons displacement, twin 1800 HP driving Voith-Scheidner cycloidal propulsion units, equal thrust in any direction.

The tug is Isswat, and the other boat is a Bristol Bay Gillnetter. Both are associated with the Center for Wooden Boats. Probably headed to Camano Island for the annual mother's day sail at CWB's Cama Beach State Park campus. I've done that exact same trip at least twice on Isswat. It's a lot of fun.

Cool! Thanks for the info. Here is a picture of her starboard side, unfortunately in the afternoon the sun is on the other side of the boats. (And I was kidding about the Canadian Navy, this guy might be armed and I'm within range. )

No.....we're friends right?......YTB 640 is CFAV (Canadian Forces Auxiliary Vessel) Glendyne and she carries no armament. I wonder what she's up to though, perhaps we're contracting ship docking to help pay the bills........

She's in parade dress and they often come down to take part in the Opening Day festivities. But that was last weekend. She went thru the Locks, then came back out a couple hours later. You don't suppose she mismarked her calendar do you?

    Here's the actual article
I like that boat for what it means as much as what it is.

(You can also see the glare on the right hand side from shooting thru a window.)

I wonder if that window reflection could be cancelled with a polarizing filter. ??
