I think this is a wooden boat, altho can't be sure from here. With the boat show this weekend at CWB, I really expected a lot more traffic today, but there has been very little. And now I have to leave for happy hour, so if they are late, they miss their chance at fame.

Forgive me for not knowing the exact Navy terminology, but I think this is either a captain's gig or an admiral's barge. This may be the one that moors at Keyport and appears at some shows, altho all of this may be wrong. It may be a different boat entirely.

That is Old Man IV, a 52 foot Monk design, twin Cummins. Admiral's Barge.
I talked with these folks at the Wooden Boat Festival. That's actually an LHF design, a slightly modified Didikai with the sharp stern changed into a small transom, a bowsprit added, and the mizzen removed. She has a bit of lee helm, they reported, but they like the open cockpit.
Strangely enough, they said I was the only one who'd seen the boat and correctly recognized it as a Didikai.
On the trailing edge of technology.

They don't want to attract the unwanted attention of any passing U-Boats.
Crew of four, easiest duty in the fleet. Pretty much a show boat. They are assigned to her for a year, then rotated off. Some talk last year of retiring her from the circuit, but I guess not yet. She makes 17-18 knots, and does all of that when transiting. She blew by us a year or two ago in the Strait of J.D. Fukah like we were standing still and we were doing 12 Kts. They don't buy the fuel, only reason I could reckon for such a display of speed. Heavy build too. Like Nan.

Not sure, I think the name on the bow might be "Puffin".

At first glance I thought this was the Boeing yacht "Daedalus". But it isn't and I can't quite make out the name. I'm wondering if it might have been an earlier Boeing yacht.

Here is Daedalus for comparison.

Puffin it is......Another Garden design, built at Jensen Shipyards in Friday Harbour. She's 47' by 15' but from a distance you don't get just how big she is. The main deck midships is over 5' above the water, coming up to her in a dinghy she's huge. There are 4 staterooms downstairs, saloon and galley in the deckhouse, original power was a 6 cylinder Cummins (may still be).

M/Y Life Of Riley pulled up next to us at Campbell River in 2002. But I remember it being green. Looking at other pics online shows that that has to be it though.

There you go, mystery solved.Marlinda (ex Life of Riley) being launched at Delta 10/14/07. Notice the change in hull color from green to steel blue.
Socked in this morning, can't even see the other side of the channel. No sense in even snapping the shutter.
By the way, a big yacht called "Life of Riley" (and there have been a few so named, so I could have this wrong) in my experience generally means that the vessel is or was owned by Lute Riley (or his family) who had/has a string of auto dealerships in Texas. I believe he trades his boats regularly, just as you'd expect a guy who owns car dealerships to do. I did a quick google on this; nothing definitive came up, but I have been moored alongside a couple of "Life of Riley" big yachts and talked with the owner, even have his card somewhere. It's been a few years now, so I am not up on the latest developments in Riley's life, but from what I can tell, it has been a successful one, as ownership (or even prior ownership) of any late model Delta surely would confirm.
I toured Westerly about 20 years ago when she was listed up in LaConner. Admired for years as a boy when she was moored in Everett.
I even had talked my then wife into considering her for a liveaboard, but not much headroom. Guess she was made for short people.
From what I recall, locally built, and built as a yacht, not a conversion. I think 1920's, but not sure
Good background info Lew. I'm still a little curious why the current incarnation as Marlinda is the same, somewhat unusual color as Boeing's Daedalus. Is Daedalus also a Delta and is the color just a coincidence?
Wonder what happened to SchoonerRat. After I finally got a picture of a real schooner (Adventuress) a couple of weeks ago, we haven't heard from him. I certainly hope everyone saw the big green smiley grin face on my comment about no more bitchin'. (I'm sometimes told that my humor is often misunderstood).
#596, #600: I spoke to the owner last year at the CWB. Magnificently built in Venice. I think she is named Serenissima. And IIRC correctly her as-built price was supposedly firmly north of $350K.

That's one fine specimen right there. A real tribute to her gender.

Daedalus (the new one) is not a Delta (I believe). There have been at least two Daedalus (Daedali?) since I have been here. The first, a gorgeous and sleek somewhat smaller craft and lower than the current version. I preferred it to look at (if you recall it was a white yacht top to bottom), but no doubt the new one is more a la mode. I believe the latest Daedelus may be European in origin but I really don't know. I do think Daedelus (II) is somewhat larger than any of the current Delta molds though.
Where's Tad when you need him?
For wooden boat guys, surely Navita and Taconite would be the favorites, though.
By the way, I've always thought the name (Daedelus) was a great choice for an airplane company to name it's yacht; certainly far superior to Icarus!
I haven't thought about Navita in a while. She used to moor astern of me when I had my BSK at Shilshole. At that time I believed owned by the jewelry store magnate, don't remember the name. Is she still around? I believe she was Blanchard built?
Lew,
According to this http://www.charterworld.com/index.ht...=daedalus-2869 The current Daedalus is indeed a Delta 151 launched in 1999, design by Delta/Ron Holland and interior design by Ardeo of Seattle. There is almost nothing to differentiate these big motoryachts except the colour and antenna arrangement but the reverse bulwark around the bow is a Ron Holland touch.......

Ah! Well, I am glad I invoked you then. She does look like a Delta, doesn't she, after all. And it makes sense, after all. Why would Boeing buy a Eyro yacht. They generally are pretty good about doing business locally, and there is nothing to be ashamed of in commissioning a Delta. I rarely see this one leave the dock; the older boat was out all the time.
Which raises another question, Mr. TR. What of the last one? Could you look into your magic twanger and tell us about what became of that one, Tad?

I remember the older boat tied in Campbell River and at Stuart Island in the summers of my youth.......long ago.......
The older boat was a Feadship (I believe) supposedly built in the mid 1960's, I don't know her original name but at some point she was lengthened to 120' by Diana Yacht Design and renamed Daedalus. Boeing sold her to Dennis Washington who gave her his usual over-the-top remake and re-named her Attessa xx(II? I think), then Dennis sold her to make way for Attessa III and IV.......boats are a great way to blow off excess money........Which raises another question, Mr. TR. What of the last one? Could you look into your magic twanger and tell us about what became of that one, Tad?
