That is Vagabond, a 42 foot Dreamboat. No 45' foot Dreamboats boats were turned out by LUDDCO, but some were lengthened after the fact. The 45 footers were Geary designed bridgedecks, and nice boats in their own right. They are sometimes referred to as "Dreamboats" (the 45s) but really, I think "Dreamboat" means the boats built after (patterned like) Lawana and which take the shape (more or less) of the boat in the photo. Needless to say there are a few non-original features on Vagabond, but that's not atypical.

Damn I envy your office view! I do have a window, but it doesn't open. It looks across the drive to landscaped area, well maintained but rarely showing much of interest. Occasionally I see a woodchuck. At home I would shoot it on sight, but in what passes for a City in New Hampshire, that would not be P.C., even if I could open my window.

If you shot it, the window would at least have an opening.

She was originally rigged with a roller furling jib and mizzen (300 sq ft total) for steadying purposes but also enough to allow steerage running downwind to shelter should the power plant quit. She carries 1000 gallons of fuel and 400 of water. I believe Decca Radar owned her for a time as a demonstrator/research vessel.

Yeah; Tad corrected me (again) as I attributed incorrectly to Atkin (now corrected in my post). For some reason I get the two names bolloxed in my head regularly. Should pay closer attention.....

I do appreciate having this view, but remember, this is Seattle. (And my windows don't open either).

I don't like to point things out...............But Lew I think you had it right the first time, "Alden" it is, not Atkin.......Think big city downtown Boston (white shirts and ties every day) for Alden vs rural Connecticut farms and shade-tree boatyards for Atkin.........

Grr, I did it again! (Your gentle "redirection" is always appreciated). I have a thing going on there that is infuriating More infuriating as Jake can attest: we were parked alongside "Island Navigator" for many years so the mistake is at once both more aggravating and egregious!

You've just proven that you really did leave the east coast & are a true Seattlite (sp?) now. See? You'd even know how to spell that!

Us easterners know an Alden when we see one.

Over here Neoga often gets mistaken for a Rhodes. That wouldn't happen out your way.

Good eye, Tad! I was trying to remember why that boat looked so familiar! There once was a fellow named Carston who was a broker for Dock Street. At the time I thought I might actually be buying WAYWARD WIND. Which was moored next to BEAGLE II on the SE corner of the Ballard bridge in Seattle. Long story longer, my good friend ended up buying WAYWARD. And Carston invited us over for a few fantastic meals aboard BEAGLE. It turned out I couldnt afford either one, but man o man was that BEAGLE a cool boat!

Wasnt there something behind the name other than just Darwin? Like they built it to follow the steps of the original or something? For an old documentary?

Well, twas a puzzla but I figured this one out........Now Called Sarah Elizabeth Banks, began life in 1906 as a steam powered, fire-fighting “river-watch” boat in Sunderland, England.
First named the Steam Ship (SS) Fire King, the riveted hull vessel was assigned to combined fire watch and police duty. Her steam engines are now replaced by a pair of John Deere's.

Yes, cool boat but typical Garden with little windy stairs up and down all over the place, tiny accommodations in a big boat. There is nothing like wide side decks to give the feeling of a real ship underfoot. Originally she was ketch rigged with twin 6-71's I believe. Don't know about the movie but there was some foolishness published by Sea Magazine a while back about her being a copy of the original Beagle!!! Just dumb......you would think they knew better.......

And I dug in the files and there she was.....broker add from about 1965, she was fairly new and I was 10 years old......

Perhaps a Grebe (Illinois) or Stephens (California) that's been modified/modernized with the addition of flying bridge and swept mast.

And yet a couple more apologies about the pictures; when the sun is out this time of day, there is glare on the window that I'm shooting thru and the window doesn't open. Secondly, I've noticed that all these boats seem to appear much shorter than they are. There is a foreshortening angle from this vantage point, they are not really seen in profile, but rather more from the bow quarter. As an example, Argonaut II shown above is actually 73' long. The photo below is the same boat seen more her proper length.

Now 90 years old! After a visit aboard Argonaut II Ron McClure writes in his book Classic Wooden Yachts of the Northwest, "I suddenly feel anxious to get home and resume working on the restoration of my own boat, rejuvenated about the concept of keeping old wooden boats alive. They are important. Perhaps more important than their owners or stewards."

Designed by Edson B. Schock (who had a office in Vancouver prior to and after WWI) and built at Menchions Shipyard in Vancouver's Coal Harbour, she was originally a yacht, the Greta M, owned by the Powell River Company. In 1937 she became the Thomas Crosby VI, owned by the United Church of Canada, and operated as a BC coast mission boat for 30 years. She was a floating hospital, library, post office, maternity ward, church, and mortuary visiting canneries, logging camps, lighthouses, and Indian villages all over the coast. I first saw her in about 1967, just out of church ownership with "some hippies" (a young man with longish hair, we lived in a logging camp) living aboard and cruising. Shortly thereafter she was bought by Julian Matson and restored over the next 30 years at Boat Harbour. I see she no longer has her massive 1954 Decca radar(oldest still operating in 2000)........

A couple of years ago at the CWB July 4th event, Chief Sealth, the old Seattle fireboat, was parked alongside us, Rita, Argonaut and a number of others. Argonaut was owned by David Walker, (who bought her from Julian) at the time. In any event, some fool on board Chief Sealth fired up the pumps, which commenced to spray a lot of water across the yachts in attendance, most of which had open ports, doors and windows. Argonaut was directly in the path, and the old Decca took a beating from which it never recovered. They laughed at us when we came over and screamed at them to turn the pumps off. Idiots.
I just happened to be there at the time. Small world, huh?

Yes, Bell Harbor Rendezvous this weekend. Open to the public and free attendance for all. Powerboat show, so no schooners except (maybe) for Red Jacket.
Weather will be overcast; normal for this time of year.

Teensy, even! But on the other hand, there are a lot of details and plenty to be informed (or ill-informed) about.
BTW, Argnaut's new owner has been working on her with diligence. She is improved and gotten a good amount of the work she has been wanting.

Any reason to keep the anchors in the hawse when you are abandoning ship? Even if it were too deep, what would have been the harm in letting the anchors go before the USCG helo hauled you away? Eventually the boat might fetch up somwhere shallow enough long enough to facilitate a tow. Even if they failed to find bottom, it would have made the underwriters happier that you at least attempted to do something.
