Woke up in Wichita this morning and turned on the weather- "Thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes until early afternoon."
"Isolated tornadoes"? WTF is up with that?!

The thunderstorms happened to a level I'd not seen in a while. In NY we'd call them "gullywashers". Two inches in about three hours. The lightning lit up a really dark day. It's so damn flat here that we watched it coming for over an hour before it hit. (No tornadoes).

Early (long) lunch and back at it in some pretty sticky mud for the rest of the day.

Beer was good and cold at the local watering hole after work.

Still- WTF is up with "isolated tornadoes"? Screw that!

Is North America, and predominantly the U.S. the only place that has a lot of tornadoes? For instance I can't recall ever hearing of a tornado in France. . .

I would prefer "isolated tornadoes" to "scattered tornados" or "a front of tornadoes moving in" or "tornado showers" or even "partly tornado-y with a chance of clearing later in the day".

Wichita was know as "Ouachita" or "Wa****a" by the natives there. A particularly good type of abrasive stone (Whet stone, sharpening stone) is found near there. If you ever find a true "Wa****a" stone for a good price, grab it.

The first time I was working in India I walked to the office while watching the clouds hanging greenish overhead. "If we were back in Kansas I'd say there is a tornado coming..." I said to the office director.
"A tornado? Oh no," he replied, "We do not have tornados in India."
Thirty minutes later a twister came down Ring Road and ripped the roofs off of several houses.
"I thought you said India didn't have tornados," I said
He shrugged, "That was a whirlwind. We don't have tornados, but whirlwinds are common."

Actually, it's the largest city in the state of Kansas. Pop. 382,000. For comparison, Wilmington, NC (near where I live) has a pop. of 106,000. Raleigh, NC, the largest city in NC has a pop. of 404,000.

No tornadoes sighted yet but there's another good chance tonight. One hit yesterday in northern Oklahoma. Not sure where in relation to us.

This marks only the second time in history that the Storm Prediction Center has issued a high risk warning move than 24 hours in advance of an event. This simply means that the chance for life-threatening supercell thunderstorms is high. These types of thunderstorms are capable of producing softball size hail, winds up to and greater than 80 mph, and long-track tornadoes. This threat cannot be understated and should be treated very seriously. If you find yourself a tornado warned area, please seek shelter immediately. A storm shelter is the best place, but if you don't have one, retreat to an interior room in your house away from windows and doors.

I'm flying today from Austin TX to Minneapolis MN, right over or through it. Should be a thrill ride.

Tornado hit right down the street last night. Missed me so I celebrated by going to the strip joint. Saw a few "twisters" there.
Heading for the casino today to see if I can lose my mobile home.

Beautiful skies. No wind (kinda odd really). A great day at work and the coolest little "hole in the wall" for a $1 beer after. Grilled burgers back at the hotel yard.

I was born & raised in the College Hill area, and in 24 years I didn't see a single tornado. I did, however, see a good number of the twisters you mentioned earlier
