    Default Eureka!

the first 10 bullets I cast/weighed (randomly picked up) out of about 20, weigh between 255.2 and 255.9 with most at about 255.5 grains. This is way better than my attempts using pure lead (for uniformity)

thanks to those who helped me to get my math oiled up a bit...

I was gonna write,"You don't smell so good yourself" (in the best traditions on the immortal Stooges) but forbore. Did you change the alloy composition?

Don't give Phillip a hard time. It's been a while since he and Archimedes worked together and Phillip's Greek is a little rusty!!!

What change did you make? Composition or %age?
I'm just into reloading metallic smokeless, haven't tried casting my own projectiles yet.

    kind of a long story
years ago I started using hard lead because I wanted velocity to be higher and it leaded less
I got back to standard and lower velocities but stayed with the hard bullets out of habit
my accuracy hasn't been what I expected for a long time and then I got the 40-65 which calls for soft bullets
out of curiosity I made some soft bullets for my standard rifles and discovered the accuracy improved

now, I intend to go through them all and check for a difference

apparently, softer bullets simply work better. (in general and with exceptions)

    as to other considerations:

think about what you're trying to achieve. For instance:
semi auto pistol is not a long range tool and needs hard bullets to slide up the feed ramp... use hard bullets

large caliber rifle is a long range gun so accuracy is more important as the range increases

as to casting bullets. get back with me any other time but now (about to rush out the door). you would do better with a mentor. it's a whole other skill and fun but separate from shooting. mentors may be hard to find since 'we've' got conditioned to shooting buckets-full of bullets and less interested in accuracy over volume.
