Default No One Knows Why the Humpback Sings

Well, maybe it would be more accurate to say no man knows why the Humpback sings.

    Nature does it again.

I just caught, quite by accident, what is apparently the third and final episode of a series about how whales and dolphins use sound.

    Absolutely fascinating.

When I was about ten Nat.Geo. sent out a floppy 78 of humpbacks singing with one of it's magazines. I listened to it for hours.

Im watching it now {time difference}. Son

Andy fishes Halibut commercially in Alaska.

The Killer whales follow their boat.

Only thing they can do is move as the Killer whales pick off the hooked Halibut.

    I had that record, too!
Nat. Geo. inspired me to draw nothing but whales for a couple years in grade school. Mom kept dozens of works from my "whale period".

Cool! That and a map of Australia...I could rattle off the co-ordinates for some very obscure Australian places for years...

Ever had a whale fly on your sailboat.

I've never even heard of a whale fly before, let alone had one on my boat! Fascinating!

I even went to college planning to major in anthropology or paleontology, largely due to National Geographic. Then I got to University and discovered that the people I was expected to learn from were insufferable dullards. The History and Philosophy departments had better professors.

OMG! I went to school pre-law and found their Professors and students to be insufferable dullards so took a History and Poli.Sci. double major!

    My brutha from another mutha!

(but I found Philosophy majors even more insufferable than the pre-law twits. Wish I'd stuck it out though, Lawyering pays a hell of a lot more than under-employed Poli.Sci.Histrionics)

Yes, there were a lot of phonies at the Philosophy lectures. I was embarrassed for all the idiots who chewed on their pens and nodded like they understood Kant. I did not, and I refused to pretend like I did. I got an A. Like I said, the professors were cool.

Whales are cool, too, to bring the conversation back around.

"Fluke" by Christopher Moore will explain everything.

Kidding, but I have seen all of the PBS whale shows, great stuff.
In fact, if you can saw a penciled line, apply glue, drive nails, and bring a modest measure of patience to the task, you can build and launch a smart and able craft in as few as 40 work hours. You need not be driven by lack of tools, materials, skills, or time to abandon in frustration a project you conceived in a spirit of pleasurable anticipation.
