Default New project, 1967 carver outboard

Hey, I was just given a 1967 Carver 19 foot with an Evinrude 100 hp outboard on it. It appears to be in pretty good shape, hull has been sanded in prep for painting. I think my biggest challenge is going to be redoing the deck, Vinyl? I think thats what it was, its pretty much gone. I dont find any rot in the boat at all and it appears it was stored indoors. anyone have experience with those decks? The rest is pretty much paint and varnish I think, at least thats what initial inspection showed. Thanks for any input, I'll have some pics up at some point but todays list was just getting it home and under tarps until i can move it into the shop out at the ranch. Jim

The vinyl is probably Nautolex. My brother's Skiffcraft has it on the decks. It's like a rough pebbly finish. Nautolex calls it flooring, I think.

    Welcome aboard!

Some of the Carver Boat brochures from the 1950s and 1960s are posted on-line at the company website. They still make boats - BIG fiberglass yachts.

Some Carver brochures are also posted in the Glassic Library area of www.fiberglassics.com as well as a history of the company. By the way, the company history on the Carver website is very inaccurate. Carver did not start as a hobby in a garage. Carver did not make mahogany planked boats. The company was formed by two men in the marine industry that had a business plan. They built a brand new factory in Milwaukee to make the boat and they built molded veneer hulled boats.

I have a 1965 Carver Dealer Manual and it has actual samples of the vinyl utilized on the boats for deck and covering board covering, seating, hull liners, and floor covering. It does not indicate who made the vinyl, but Nautolex is probably a pretty good guess. In fact, when I interviewed Wally Markham (fomer owner) a few year ago, he told me a story about getting shipments from General Tire of their Nautolex marine vinyl.

Carver's 1960s lapstrake boats were made similar to those by Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. and Cruisers, Inc. (Markham had worked for both of these firms prior to buying Carver in late 1963). www.thompsondockside.com may be worth investigating.

Greetings to all. I have a 65 Carver Sportsman (thanks to Andreas' brochure for the ID) that had the vinyl deck material. Nautolex is indeed the closest to the samples I had. At the time, the Gray and Off-white colors I needed were not available, so I went with a kind of speckled white/gray combo. Looks fine, but I no longer have the center accent on the foredeck. If I recall, they had a recommended contact cement -- but I don't remember if it was a common brand recommendation, or a proprietary adhesive. Also, my boat shop buddy recommended stainless or monel staples where needed. I'll post more detail and photos in a new thread later on. Happy I found this place, (after spending too much unproductive time on iboats.)

Welcome Chip! everything I've read says problems if you dont use the nautolex adhesive. I've yet to start on this particular project but thanks for the tip on the stainless staples, i'm not sure i would have thought of it. I've got another skiff i'm trying to fnish so I can get started on the carver. Now back to the longboard........

    Well, since you're up...
I also emailed Vinyl Approach re: side graphics, and got a quote on the triangle/gold foil emblem that was pretty reasonable.
And on an unrelated note, I've actually been to Puyallup, and have relatives there...

So is this drive-by spamming based on the highlighted/link-embedded word? 50% of posts refer back to the same website. Chip

Actually, I'm not a drive by spammer. I'm a real person, not to be offensive but why are you worried about what I do? I'm not affecting you in any way shape or form. And no 50% of my posts do not refer back to the same website, sorry if i support a website....is that a crime?

Well, at the time of my posting, three of your six linked to ***tarpsplus.com***, which informed my opinion. I will, however, take your response at face value, and withdraw my accusation of involvement with that site.. with my apologies, of course. I leapt to that conclusion based on the fact that the vinyl in question had nothing to do with tarps. At all. Hence my natural curiosity. Chip

Well, thank you for apologizing, I can guarantee I am not a spammer, and it actually is quite offensive for you to suggest that. I didn't mean to add a link right there I'm not sure how I even did that, well anyways sorry i got so offended!
