Default Wooden Boat Show & Crab Feed - Oregon

Yes - it's almost time for the annual Depoe Bay event. This is one of the favorite events in Oregon - both for the setting and for the casual but busy feel. Lots of boats to look at. The Crab Feed is always worthwhile. Our boating group - the Western Oregon Messabouts - typically has a good showing there. This is where the new boats - built over the winter - come to get Christened - complete with ceremonial piping.

I'll be there Saturday only this year - though most years I come down on Friday, and don't leave till late Sunday. One of my favorite events!

    Bummer!
I'll be in Hood River that weekend doing a trade show. Any chance you could move it to the middle of the following week?

same weekend, Mothers Day, as Olympia Wood Boat Thingy, sadly.
( The oly thing is kind of campy, but I go there by boat, not car).

Hmmm... I get to Portland about every two months on business. Maybe I can swing this. April 21 and 22, right?

One of my favorite memories of this event past was rowing a faering around the corner and out through the Hole straight into the the freakin' Pacific Ocean, man! It's an amazing setting with the sedate, tiny little harbor right on the other side of the genuine deal, just a few hundred yards away behind the cliffs. Super neat-o!

    Amphibious Macroplankton Oughtredia doublendus
Mostly found frequenting the littoral and estuarine zones in the southern half of the Salish Sea, though sightings have been recorded both north and south of this area, and occasionally, but rarely, inland, in freshwater environments. This species lives on micro-brewed beer and dutch-oven biscuits, and displays brightly colored nylon and gore-tex plumage during the rainy season. Approach with caution!

Watch out for those mesmerizing comers, James!

The old timers blasted this harbor out of solid rock. At one time it was not much more than the other spouting holes along this unforgiving coast. Most days, James' foray outside in a rowboat is just not possible.

David, you forgot the link to last year's show:

You're right about that! This was one of those days where it all lined up right for a few hours. I certainly wouldn't want to have to rely on doing it regularly.

And on the right day, it's been done in a Puddle Duck Racer - out to the first buoy (and back, by god!).

Myself - I'm looking forward to the Crab Feed. It's been many months since I had any Dungeness. Too expensive to buy in the stores, and being in recovery mode has kept me from going after them myself. I can taste 'em already. Add some cole slaw, a beer, and the marvelous good company... mighty close to heaven!

Some laugh at Fate but I would never choose to take a Puddle Duck Racer anywhere. James' choice of ocean going vessel was, by far, the wiser.

It was a Joel White Shearwater as I recall, and it was an utterly delightful open water rowboat. I might even build one for myself some day. It was even possibly the boat that broke the spell that dories had had on me until then. . . though I think it was still a while before I was able to fully let go of the web of rationalizations I had built around them.

No Clue! He should come down, though. I'd buy him a beer. Ask him.
