Default when will it leak -

I have put the window in the duck punt

    port side

bought a scrap bit of polycarbonate for £15

rounded off the edges, cut the hole, marked the glueing area -

    bathroom caulk and eight bolts

How long do you guys give it before it starts weeping

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAJ5MkcER84

Really looking forward to seeing what it reveals

I would love to be able to film a seal - but the odd crab and mullet will be entertaining enough

Dylan I also look forward to seeing it in action. However I have a request first. Could I have the name of the drug you were taking cause I'd love to be able to work that fast.

I like the way you have demystified the business of simple boat building and introduced the pleasures of thin water sailing to an audience sometimes obsessed by larger, more expensive and often unreachable craft. You have done many of the lurkers and neophytes a great service with your films I reckon.
There are few storage problems, transport over long distances is almost eliminated, just take day or three and build another when you get there. Bamboo spars and cheap tarps and a bit of gaffer tape and you have a rig. The Six Hour Canoe or simple pirogue come to mind but seem to have gone out of fashion here lately. Thanks very much.

Dylan- I saw the stills. Was there a build thread? How much does that boat weigh? You are throwing that thing around.

I first saw them in west mersea

traditionally they are built of old floorboars

i needed to car top it

    so I made it light

took a week from first cut to first sail

    all the films are here

    http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/cat...ck-punt-films/

free plans - three shets of 4mm exterior grade ply and some cheap 1 x 2

My gosh. We were just discussing $500 (American) boat designs in another thread. I had some arguments against the use of materials you are talking about here. You sure are getting your money's worth (time too). Congratulations. That's something. We should all be sailing. Is the rig specified in the plans or did you use something you already had? I want to build one to check my crab pots in thin water without fussing with a trailer. Have you rowed her?

By the way- the window's great. Good luck with it. I love the videos. Thanks for sharing them.

if the boat lasts two seasons I have lost nothing

no reason why it should not last longer

it is a std opti rig - you guys can buy the whole caboodle for $250

but lots of us have old rigs hanging around the shed from our kids sailing days

in west mersea the oyster men used them as floating wheelbarrows

if there is water there you can move through it

    sails like a little witch

I might make a better one this winter with built in bouyancy - stern tank double as a back rest

they row them with two blokes - one scull each

I paddle mine with a kayak paddle when the wind is on the nose

I take the mast out and sit on the step - paddle backwards

fantastic - build one - you will not be sorry

Watched the last video where you cut the hole, how about doing another with it in the water. Great fun and great little boat. You have mastered the art of enjoying the water!!!

I once made a children's dinghy out of a single sheet cc grade 6mm ply. Made the oars from broom handles with laminated curved blades and sold it for $350.

Excellent. Who cares if or when it leaks. If it happens you can fix it or heck replace it. Build and modify to suit. Modifying experiments for photos extra excellent.

    oh bow locks

does this mean I have caught some sort of serious condition

okay..... I promise I will not build a second one until this one breaks or rots or the window starts leaking....... is that okay

    but.......

a back-rest would be so cool

    -------------

    thanks Waldo for your comment

I am planning to carry on with my journey around the UK in the 18 footer and use a punt to explore further up the creeks and rivers where the birds, fish and otters dwell

just imagine looking down through that window and seeing an otter peering back at you

    thanks for liking the films

they do look better on a telly than on a computer screen though

Well if you take bets, I'll put my money on leaks occurring the day you don't bring anything to bail with....

    sorry Welsford

    that is not good enough

from the worlds greatest living small boat designer I expect precision

    what is very soon

I intend sailing the boat every day for about four hours a day

    will it last the weeek

...regret to inform you your condition may be fatal if untreated.

Au contraire, I think you should start the second build immediately, at least on paper.
    I can't help with the viewing/filming port engineering but it's a brilliant idea - I wish I had one.
Backrest and buoyancy - what's not to like.

I'll give it at least two seasons, until around about the time that you want to replace the plexiglass anyway.

I always enjoy your videos Dylan, keep them coming mate!!!

thanks for the nice words about the films

If the window lasts this season that will be fine

I am planning on making a second punt next winter

do a better job and if the window works I shall do a better job of the next boat

same hull shape - not going to touch that - just a bit lighter and a bit more comfortable
