Default Aesthetic Perfection - a small oasis in a bilge full of politics

I don't like being constantly barraged with politics, without an alternative for escape and generally friendlier discussion. In the hopes that there may be others like me I offer up this thread as place to post things (generally man made things that you admire for their aesthetic value) Perhaps you may even be inspired to post similar non-political threads.

    OK, I'll bite.

I rewatched a lovely little film last night: 'Tortilla Soup', starring Hector Alizando and Elizabth Pena.

No spectacular CGI effects. No blood and gore. No thrill-a-minute action scenes. No gratuitous sex.

Just a really nice story about a semi-retired Mexican chef, and his three unmarried daughters.... and a plotline involving family, growing to adulthood, and above all else, food!

I love 'little' films like this. They will never get an academy award.... but they satisfy the soul.

Tonight, I think I'll re-watch yet another little gem: 'Lone Star', with Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, Matthew McConnaughy, and (also) Elizabeth Pena. This film positively sings to my heart... about unfulfilled desire, honor, repentance, and redemption.

    (Non-political enough for ya, Paul?)

    I agree, great feel-good movie.

But as long as Paul started with airplanes, I have to do this for now.

Well... I almost posted a foto of Pelosi, but she's not entirely man-made.

Of course the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum by Frank Gehry. I tried to find the photographer's credit but no luck. But nice building, nice photo.

See?...... And this is where the whole thing falls apart..... I find that building, and indeed most of Frank Gehry's buildings, sculpture, and furniture to be hideous affronts to aesthetic expression. In fact, I only say "most" because there might be, somewhere, something that that architectural miscreant designed that isn't offensive.

Debussy's The Girl with the Flaxen Hair - surely the most perfect 2 minutes and some odd seconds of music ever composed.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

"Falling Water" (Kaufman house) by Frank Lloyd Wright.
I'm quite sure this photo is by Julius Shulman but again I can't find the credit.

Definitely. I won't defend the EMP too vigorously (despite my small part in it ), but I really do like the Bilbao Guggenheim and the LA concert hall. Most who are willing to push the envelope in the arts get heavily criticized in their time. Wright and Beethoven both come to mind.

I think Gehry has become a stylist, rather than a designer per se.

Agree entirely about the Ferrari 330P4:

For me most aesthetic perfection is found "in the moment"

Like now I'm enjoying some rigatoni alfresco with my home made Sunday gravy with a glass of wonderful new Dave Mathues red called Crush, about $10 a bottle

That's at the Como Observatory, in St. Paul, MN. It's a fabulous place, with, among other things, the largest collection of Bonsai in the upper midwest.

Pictures forthcoming of 1970 Triumph Tiger tear down and rebuild which began this past weekend with friend and Brit bike officianado Chris.
This bike has had very little screwing with since it was built and since I got it in 1975.

We seek to roll with the aesthetic justice it's designers incorporated into it and we are just the guys to do it.
