Default uber thin water sailing - film

I took the Duck punt up to the Norfolk Salt Marshes and had three wonderful days sailing it through the labyrinths. I lived on the slug and spent every tide sailing around.

I had enjoyed sailing the punt on the Thames for the shake-downs but this is the sort of envronment it is designed for

sailing with the tide and defying the stream by seeking out the shallow bits

it was like chess on water - working out how to keep going - where to head for next

trying to work out where I am by taking a along a print out from google earth

    it was bloody wonderful

I have always been keen on shallow sailing - this is ubershallow sailing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_qFvMbrMWw

apologies for the stuff about birds if they are of no interest to you but lieing in the duck punt, sailing with one hand while the migratory geese wheel overhead.....

and all in a boat that is so quick and easy to build

this was an utter revelation to me

exploring the world in an entirely new way

A great film especially the birds. Your craft is perfect for it's purpose. My sailing canoe draws 2.5 inches loaded and I can sail where it's too shallow to paddle and too soft underfoot to walk. To an extent these salt marshes have their equivalent in Western Port Bay where I live. Extensive salt marshes, volcanic islets, the most southerly Mangroves found and thousands of birds - we drifted past a 2 K long flock of Black Swans the other day and we get Sandpipers that migrate to Siberia and back, Shearwaters etc. Many stay at home native species of course.

Dylan, what a wonderful video. Who would have thought your plea for help finding plans for the Duck Punt would come to this. I have watched our Keyhaven Marshes flock of Brent geese wheel overhead just as they do in your video, but I had no camera with me, so it was very special for me to watch your video - thanks so much Dylan.

thanks for the nice comments chaps

    secret water

I spent a few months exploring the walton backwaters - where S and A is set

    free films here

although they all look better on a trelly than they do on a computer screen

    http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/cat...waters/page/5/

although you may not like what I have to say about Ransom who was a double agent who came within a smidgin of being shot by the British

    Dylan

PS - I am thinking of putting a couple of transparent panels in the side of the punt - it sails really well on its ear and that should give me a good underwater view

    Beautiful, Dylan!
Is there any provision in the punt for a longitudinal runner that diminishes sideslip?

I consulted Mr Gavin Atkin who is a very thoughtful and knowledgeable designer of easy to build and functional boats.

he said that putting runners on it might help the hull to grab the water and obviously offer some hull protection

    but.....

he says the chine is there to stop the side slip - use it

. When you tack around the flat bottom means that it flips around with a single oar stroke - strips along the bottom muight make it harder to tack

Now that I have sailed the boat I can see that he was dead right

the other thing is that if the strips are half an inch thick then that is half an inch less water that the boat can sail in.

As you come over the shallow ground the boat creates a little wave under the flat hull so it can actually sail on tiny self gerated wave that really allows you to slip over sand banks.

All round a wonderful sailing experience

of course there will be mad boat tweakers who could make it sail better by adding a lee-board and a rudder

but that would compromise its main benefit - which is incredibly thin sailing

    - but I love the boat for all its faults

it is like sailing a bit of history.

    Now..... as for the film

did any of you guys bother clicking the youtube buttons to make it at hd and full screen with you sitting wathing with your head four feet from the computer

I would love to know if the camera work stands up to a bigger screen

If it broke up it your computer display that is struggling

you could try a diffferent browser

chrome, astonishgly, does well with youtube as they are both owned by the same mighty corporation

firefox us usually better than the blue one

try it and let me know

just curious - I fear that I might be wasting my time making them work at full screen

that is great. There is inevitably some movement in the images - they were filmed from a moving boat and without the benefit of tripod on solid ground. At times the boat is aground and then I can hold the camera steady on my knees.

but generally the best shots seem to come when both the boat and the birds are moving

but youtube compressions can be pretty brutal

Tried again Dylan. Same again, using Chrome, fairly new computer and fast but cheapskate Plusnet broadband.

the bandwidth should have nothing to do with it

do you have any other programmes running in the background

did you force it to go to the full HD

perhaps all you did was to expand the little 320 and are not getting all the digits

there is a little gear wheel in the bottom of the frame

    change that to 720p

    then try

    let me know

    Dylan,

Just tried the full HD version and .... WOW! It's as though you're in the boat. Image nice and sharp ...

I like .... yes please ... more HD!

Very nice Dylan. For some reason I'm never able to get full screen, but large player is close to full. At 720 it was jumpy, but at 480 smooth and clear. I live within 200 yards of not being able to access hi speed, which probably explains the jumpiness at 720. Thank you for making my lunch break more enjoyable.

try letting it buffer and it should stop jumping

your bandwidth should not have any impact on it

start the film - then pause it while it buffers

come back to me and let me know

    Tanks Dylan!

Another excellent film, felt like I was there with you in the punt. Really makes me wish spring would come faster, great work again.

    Bravo! ( and "Encore!")

    Kevin
This new ship here is fitted according to the reported increase of knowledge among mankind. Namely, she is cumbered end to end with bells and trumpets and clocks and wires. It has been told to me she can call voices out of the air or the waters to con the ship while her crew sleep. But sleep though lightly. It has not yet been told to me that the sea has ceased to be the sea.--Rudyard Kipling

Tried it, let the entire thing buffer at 720 but it still jumped at about 3 jjjumps/second. It's at my end, same thing happens with Netflix sometimes. Thanks again. I'm producing strips again, a bit tedius and seeing you out there exploring has given me a bit more incentive.

    sounds like myour display adapter

it looks fine on my desktop but is a bit jumpy on the laptop

the amount of movment in the films makes it hard for the computer to cope

    shame....

the films look better on a telly

one person asked me how it goes upwind

    the answer is surprisingly well

a rudder and a leeboard would improve it but the firm chine and the big paddle really help

I will post a film with just the sailing with and against the tide

I will get better - on the mirror offshore I can stand up to film - it is much easier to get a steady frame

on the punt I am lying down

I need to develop a new technique

I have a few ideas for improving it
