Default I should have been a cop for the $$$'s

    http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/daily...193437113.html

I was interested in being a mountie when I was younger but i couldn't have been since I was allergic to horses and you had to ride a horse then. Not any more, you only go on a horse if you join the Musical Ride.

Also, as my Dad said, "You'll have to rob banks on weekends to support a family on these wages." It was all for God,
    King & country then.

    They do okay now though.

I know an ex-cop who was "injured" on the job, and ended up with full retirement bennies after 10 years on the force. What he makes for sitting on his duff I could very easily live on.....

We can beat that in Little Rhody ....a Providence cop was "injured" in a scuffle on her 1st day on the job 21 years ago and has been collecting ever since. Her current benefit is $65,900/yr (tax free).

What I didn't see in this article is that the number of officers, per capita, has increased also, despite decreasing crime rates.

And journalists who write sentences like this:
When Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi broached decreasing the police budget 1.5 per cent, his councillors over-rode him and boosted the budget by $18.3 million.
ought to be shot. How can one compare 1.5% to $18.3 million without knowing the total budget? One needs to compare apples to apples, percentages to percentages, and numbers with numbers. What's even worse is that this article steals this line from a Globe and Mail article as if it makes sense to the yahoo at Yahoo! So that's two yahoo's who don't know a vapid sentence when they see one.

We had a guy at work who was a mountie for 20 years and one day. Retired as a corporal on a pension of about $4,000 per month, came to work for us at the age of 41 for $50,000 per year. This about 10 years ago.
    Do'in okay.

Cops are damned if they ... and damned if they don't. I would not wish that profession on anyone I like!

Cops who do their jobs using common sense, decency, while following procedure are never damned when they do. It's just that so many of them don't feel a sense of decency, don't care about procedure, and have zero common sense.

I worked with a guy who got out of the Army in 68 at age 21 and joined Alaska State Troopers. Full retirement at age 36. Became a Deputy Sheriff and fully retired from that at age 56. He is now a full time captain on a Microsoft executives yacht in Puget Sound. He fully enjoyed each position.

Read the internet, the paper ... or watch the news b-b ... I do NOT need to post links for folks like you ... or anyone else. DO YOU LIVE IN A BUBBLE? Seriously ... you have never been around law-enforcement, me thinks ... or, you are just being silly. Good night.

No I don't live in a bubble. I also don't believe that cops that follow procedure, treat people with dignity and decency, and use common sense, are typically placed in a position where they're on the defensive.

    YMMV.

I'm reluctant to tell you this, Braam, but I must.
Having been a cop a few years I can assure you that a cop with all the best intentions, a big heart, decent, sensible, baby girls at home, can and Will find himself in situations where he must defend himself on an animal dog-eat-dog level.
If I had not responded in kind to physical attacks by distraught neurotic people, I'd have been dead numerous times.
Lucky for me, I never had to kill one of the crazy bastids, although I could have justifiably done so.

I thought we were pro-union here in the Bilge. What's wrong with collecting good government pensions? Isn't that what all the fuss was about in Wisconsin?

I can't complain. I collect three generous government pensions myself, and this year add SS to that. I appreciate the unions and all you tax payers.
