Default Oughtred's Puffin aka 10 foot Acorn

What do people think of this design? I have a line on one mostly built that is for sale for a good price.

I would finish the boat and use it as a tender and sailing dinghy.

The boat to date is a rowing only version. The plans I found suggest you can use a leeboard or centerboard or daggerboard. There is either a balanced lug or a sliding gunter rig.

Thoughts on which rig or which foil to use?

My friend Dan Pence in Portland built a 10 which I've both rowed and sailed. And my partner Andy built an 8 trad. lap for rowing only. These are lovely boats! I bought the plans for the 10 myself, though I eventually ended up building a pram instead for use specifically as a ship-to-shore tender. But I'd totally build a 10 at some point in the future if I needed a compact cartopper.

The most rational rig for it is the balance lug, I think. But you probably knew I was going to say that. A daggerboard or centerboard is vastly preferable to a leeboard in practice I've found. I'd probably go DB unless I was going to keep her on a trailer instead of cartopping.

    Andy's trad. 8 footer.

    Amphibious Macroplankton Oughtredia doublendus
Mostly found frequenting the littoral and estuarine zones in the southern half of the Salish Sea, though sightings have been recorded both north and south of this area, and occasionally, but rarely, inland, in freshwater environments. This species lives on micro-brewed beer and dutch-oven biscuits, and displays brightly colored nylon and gore-tex plumage during the rainy season. Approach with caution!

I've near finished a 10' for one of my sons, not sailed it yet, but I chose it for beam/stability/looks/lines/sail-ability and weight. I've done it in a lightweight marine ply, + cedar and mahogany, so I can easily car-top it for quick sessions after school etc., and chose a loose footed lug for the same reason, plus the ease and safety of the sailing (he's only eight), and I chose the centreboard (pivoting) option as we live in a sandy world here. I thought it would become a tender for a larger boat but I think I'll have to make another in a tougher (albeit heavier) plywood for that, and probably shorten it just a bit for an easily managed tender. Handsome boats. I met a guy anchored in Port Sandwich Vanuatu who built one about 13' as a tender, and halved it midships (bolted together) for easy stowage. He said it sailed and rowed great, and from memory I don't think he had a motor. I'd say go for it, if a good price. Just for interest, here's a couple of shots of Port Sandwich - pretty out of the way place.

Sorry if that's too distracting, but such good memories when I think about it - I think I'll do a People & Places thread on it

The Acorn is considered by a few aficionados here to be a great boat, and for a tender - do a search

Very pretty (both the tender and Port Panini).
A people and places thread is definitely in order, Sayla!

Thanks for the replies and the beautiful views of the tropics. If it works out, I will be putting a DB case in this boat and sailing with a lug rig.

I have never sailed a lug rig, but am always looking for the new experience

Don't tell anyone, but I've been thinking of building Puffin at 150% (15' x 6') with decking, self-bailing cockpit, water ballast and a cuddy. Kind of an overgrown SCAMP.

Yes, but no new boat thread yet. Haven't had time to put one together. Monk 35 foot Roughwater trawler.

I looked at and bought the Puffin. The price was less than the cost of materials for a boat that's largely completed.

    I think I scored.
