Well the common thought is spycraft. It is simple as a one time pad in its effectiveness too and pretty much based on that. It is been recently reported that FARC is running periodic broadcasts and drug cartels have gotten into the act. Many times when using a spectrum analyzer I have found impeded signals in them. Now burst satellite transmissions in digital form spread spectrum are pretty standard but numbers stations will always have their place in the craft.

Whats you idea? Be happy to hear it.

I think it is US military in nature, though they were around prior to nuke weapons I think now they are primarily used for some sort of daily back up code for launch orders for stratweps. of course I have nothing to back up my hypothesis

Oh, there are signals all over the world. In many languages and formats. The old timers say there were stations back in WW1. Cuba had one signal that bled all over the place. They were cranking out the KW's there. Back when I was a kid I used to tune up over a Soviet one all the time back when you had to dink with tubes.

I would still play with tubes and still have the test equipment but it takes a lot of power when the modern radios are very efficient. I have a big peice of AM gear with all the parts to retube in storage but it takes 240 VAC to get those babys heatin' . Still the Audio output is sweet. One good thing is they are Pretty EMF proof but I figure if the Sun or an Earthbound enemy wants to hit the big button radio may be the least of my concerns. Still I think I could have her burning in a couple of days if required.

Do you think your righteous posting mostly hateful comments to the forum. I would ask anyone just search your recent posts. You rarely have anything to say past trying to knock someone down. Quite a few posters like that here and your far from special. You reward will come and you completely misguided if you think you having any effect past filling the threads with trash. I really feel sorry for you pitiful man.

Glenn doesn't have much self esteem. He behaves that way because it makes him feel like a BMOC. He will call in his friends soon to point out his fantastic his posts are and what a man he is in the process. Its also an ego thing.

I dont think any modern electronics can touch the sound that comes from an old high tube count radio - specially the old consoles - its a shame that they will probably only be found in museums in a score of years - all the folks that know how to keep them alive are dying off

My goodness, I find myself agreeing with Dutch! I carried a tube caddy back in the day, doing service calls on home electronics. I still have a fair amount of tube operated audio including vatious Altec amps and mixers, the Hammond in my living room and a Trans Oceanic that I really ought to get out and fire up, it's been a while. Tube stuff is fun, and practical in the event of a random EM pulse!

Now I believe that Glenn.Bobbys is right. It would be about me. See, I don't question or doubt everything at all.

About wardd, I've asked this question a number of times.
Regarding me, I think my avatar is sufficient enough for the bilge. Glenn, where is yours?I don't even see that!

I always presumed they were spy messages.. and would have thought they would have been extinct by now, with the sorts of advanced digital communications these days. Then again, smaller foreign nations might still be not technologically advanced enough to replace them.
Radio doesn't really offer the possibility of doing network/traffic analysis, since you can only observer the transmission.

USENET offers the same sort of protections against traffic analysis, since its a distributed store-and-forward system. It's very easy to inject messages into the system and falsify their origin. And there's no way of knowing who has read what message since NTTP doesn't require any sort of authentication. I seem to remember reading a few years back that somebody had done some analysis of image traffic in USENET's alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.* hierarchy -- more terabytes of copyright violations than you can possibly imagine. They determined that a rather surprising portion of the traffic appeared to contain steganographic messages. I always thought that was suspect. If you do it right, burying a properly encrypted text among the low order bits of the pixels, it should be essentially undetectable.

But it wouldn't surprise me USENET was being used as another vector for covert communication: a one-type pad consisting of a list of porn stars or subject lines. Every day, suck down the appropriate stuff and run it through your magic decoder ring to see if there's a message for you.

Email spam would be another opportunity for this sort of thing. A lot of that has embedded images or these days, apparently random text. And if you're running a botnet with thousands of compromised machines, sending millions of apparently random emails every day to millions more apparently random recipients, it would very difficult indeed to snatch the signal from the noise, unless you were in on the secret.
