Default Hoana hit by another timber boat

Historic Sydney Harbour 30 foot class yacht Hoana was badly damaged in Athol Bight on 27 January 2012 by an overtaking timber motor cruiser.

Hoana, a gaff rigged centreboard sloop was built here circa 1933 by Hayes of kauri on spotted gum ribs.

She is best known for circumnavigating the globe (incl Cape Horn) post WW2 with Bob Adams (of Adams X fame) at the tiller.

Owned by Martin van der Waal since 1987 she has an enviable race record with Sydney Amateur Sailing Club, the hub of timber boat activities in the state.

    Best wishes for her recovery!

Don't sailboats have the right-of- way in OZ?

Yes but stinkboats don't always know it. Though it is usually the owners of big F/G gin palaces that are ignorant.

Overtaken vessels have right-of-way too. But in Sydney, who cares?

I hope the 'Margoletta' driver is, ah, suitably reprimanded.

That's not important Rick, we know he's guilty.
Honestly though I did wonder how it happened.

Read abt in the current SASC journal on line. From Martin's text it appears to have hit near the cockpit quartering from astern. I only hope she won't be written off as many insurers prefer to undervalue both the boat and the cost of proper repairs (from bitter experience).

UPDATE: Assessors wanted to write her off but thanks to the ANM, their curator David Payne and some considerable pressure she is up being repaired at Simon Sadubin's shed at Chowder Bay. So work to date has 32 ribs removed and replaced from the cockpit aft plus the coach house and coamings repaired and knees and planking seen to. Coming along very well.

    Thanks for the update, Purri.

I always thought David's part-time appointment was a good move on the ANMM's part....

Betcha any dosh the same assessor wouldn't write off a Rolls from 1933 in a pink fit. Bit sad how we seem to write off our unique maritime heritage so easily, but a vehicle built on a semi-production line in ye olde country would get all the money for repairs it would need in a quartering collision.

^ and that is why Oz needs a brokerage house with insurance cover underwritten by a big European (French?) insurer. I'd say that the number of claims and cost vs premiums would make it a winner for both parties. Anyone have info?

Just thought I'd let you all know that Hoana was relaunched the Wednesday just gone (June 20th), and all went very smoothly. I'm led to believe there'll be articles to follow in the near future.
