I just realized that I posted three times in a row.
I'm officially retarded.
You can all quit wondering.

2x's were the previous incarnation.. The P/U is a 4x4 hi-lift w/ a high top cap.. I got tired of working at 7'+ adjusting them.. I'm 6'1" & I took that photo holding the camera over my head. - plus, you're just envious.. ;-)
The bastard son of a Red Oak & a White Oak? I seem to recall a biologist friend told me there are only two kinds of oaks.. White, & Black.. All others belong to one of those. Anybody have any more confirming/conflicting info on that?Probably a Scarlet Oak

Hey, how did I miss this thread.
Nice red oak bench.![]()
Where I come from we would classify it as "Dead Oak".
Nice Bench.
Stay calm, be brave....wait for the signs.
Yes , zero would be less than a case , or more , every weekend and a twelve pack or so a night I'd say, how about you? Care to share? I could out drink damned near anyone I ever drank with, all over the world. 100 percent USN sailor, party hard , work hard , hoot with the owls and sour with the eagles as we used to say.

FWIW ,
OAK: Oak is the most widely used hardwood. There are more than 60 species of oak grown in the U.S., which can be separated into two basic varieties; white and red. The red variety is also known as black oak (a reference to its bark).Properties: Oak is a heavy, strong, light colored hardwood. It is ring porous, due to the fact that more and larger conductive vessels are laid down early in the summer, rather than later. Prominent rings and large pores give oak a course texture and prominent grain. Oak also has conspicuous medullary rays which can be seen as "flakes" in quarter sawed oak lumber.Uses: Oak is the most popular wood used to craft American and English country designs. It is also used for Gothic and William & Mary reproductions, as well as many transitional and contemporary pieces.

Almost.
For the Americas, in the species quercus the red and black groups are the two predominant and the most prevalent and commercially important. But there are also the canyon oaks of the desert southwest. There are additional groups and subgroups of oaks in Asia and Europe.

Hey Paul, it that the bench that you inlayed a little fishie, to cover a blemish. It was Milo's idea, IIRC. I hope he is feeling better.
It is late here on the rainy east coast, and I am out of here.

Thanks.. I had remembered the red & black switched.. It was quite a few years ago..
This was an apparently full grown oak - maybe 6' or 7' tall, I found in AZ..For the Americas, in the species quercus the red and black groups are the two predominant and the most prevalent and commercially important. But there are also the canyon oaks of the desert southwest. There are additional groups and subgroups of oaks in Asia and Europe.
I take it these are of what you refer too?

Good.
Big Mac Daddy AL wooda had this stupid bench finished by now!.
O my I fear Dougs gonna kick my azz now!![]()
I don't bother listening, or answering when Doug calls..... I just put the phone down and continue doing what I'm doing.... Every 5 minutes or so I pick it up and say "Yes dear", or "Oh, I agree dear, you're so right!" and then put the phone back down for another 5 minutes... At least it keeps the tele-marketers and political hacks from getting through.....

I had the pleasure of (briefly) talking to Doug (botebum) on the phone once.
He certainly does know how to make the most of his minutes.
. . . I'll go along with Lefty and others here.(It's not White Oak)
In John Gardener's book, Wooden Boats to Build and Use, he mentions types of red oak that are suitable for boat construction, believe it or not. He warned against using oak that smelled sour, the so called "piss oak".
I know, he's not building a boat, but since Doug said it smelled like cat piss, maybe that's what he's got.
And, Doug, if Scooter is likely to use that as a step stool at some point, you may want to figure out some way to give the feet a wider stance (front to back) or it may be tippy. Ask me how I know that.![]()
