Then you've done what you can reasonably do, Barney. Daughters come with their own charms and their own challenges, but all things in, I do love mine no end. I wouldn't change a thing, but I do think just one son would have been handy in my life....if he had caulking and varnishing skills!

Smoking consumed more than just a lot of cash, it was a punctuation in my life. So......

I have to completely re-think how I approach the daily habits I have. Even though I find it difficult, Guess what?.......

I dont smoke no-more, an I ain't gonna start again!!!!!!!
About the daily habits yes, it's funny but when I have a serious Oh ooh head scratching moment during the work on my boat, my hands start searching for that packet of tobacco. To counter that craving I take a look at my tools and at the boat, that is taking shape, and I say to my selve "Thank you tobacco money"
At home I don't even think about it anymore.

I gave up in 2003 and was off fags for about 7 years. Then I had a lot of stress going on. Funny thing was the stress did not cause me to smoke again, but when the situation was finally resolved, I sat down one day, heaved a sigh of relief and lit up a smoke.
I shouldn't say this, but I quite enjoyed this relapse. Still and all, I always knew it should be short term, and to tell the truth it has been a little longer than I had envisaged.
I used the same process for giving up as I did in 2003. For a week I did not smoke till at least midday, then allowed myself a few for the afternoon and evening. Then on a Monday morning I slapped on a medium patch to get me right through that day. The next day I also used a patch, but not until I really felt I needed it, took it off straight after evening meal and went to bed early. Next day I got through with no patch and that's a fortnight ago and I have no more urges.

I know this is precisely what is not recommeded, but it has worked for me- and I prefer to get off the nicotine as fast as possible.
That's excactly the difficulty in giving up smoking, finding out what suits you. There is no one size fits all.
I have tried your method albeit without the patch, but it drove me crazy, all day long I would think about, and crave that cigaret.
For me there was the cold turkey way without patches or nothing. When I tell that to people that I stopped cold turkey they are amazed, but blieve it or not, I tried many other ways, and they all failed.

Bingo! Give that man a cigar....er.... a brewsky! Finding what works is key; it's different for everyone; it's simply a matter of knowing what options are out there, and pursuing them, relentlessly.

I have had a success. As I told you in this thread a couple of weeks ago, my oldest boy turned up at home smoking. Update!!!

Because of the Olympic marathon, he has decided to go back into serious training for distance running, so, No more smokes for my baby boy.

Isn't this the best news you have heard today?, is for me.

The Australian High Court has today declared the legality of health legislation requiring tobacco companies to sell cigarettes in plain drab green packs with no logos or advertising at all.
"Cigarettes will be sold in plain packaging from December after the High Court this morning dismissed the tobacco industry’s challenge to the world-first laws.A majority of justices rejected manufacturers’ argument that laws were unconstitutional. The court did not publish the reasons for its decision."

    Implications internationally will be interesting.

Sku, it's a step in the right direction. There is a point when corporations have to stand up and defend their products and then put in when they cause health problems to their consumers.

For many years the tobbacco in dustry lied about the effects of smoke, now the piper has to be payed.

Mind you mate, they spent gazillions of dollars and the effect is: one lad no longer smokes. It is good for my boy, but, they could use the money in a way that has better outcomes. As it is the olympics is set up to make sure the athletes make as much money from post olympics endorsements as possible and the officials have as much power as a head of state.

Ive managed to score the first cold infection that I've had in over twenty years. I dont do sick real well so my poor bride has to put up with me barking like a seal all day.

'When I smoked I never got sick, now that I have given ém up I am getting every little infection going. WTF,

I'm gonna take ém up again that way I'll die a fit and healthy man???!!!!!! LOL

Nah, I'll just have to keep fighting on, cause, if I take ém up again, I will suffer a very agonising death at the hands of SWMBO.

Hi, my name's Steve, and I'm a nicotine-aholic. I smoked (a pipe and cigarettes) for 19 years but have been clean for 21. It was the toughest (and best) thing I've ever done. The only reason one keeps smoking is because they are addicted. Why else would you put poisons and toxins into your body? Do whatever it takes to quit the habit. After "quitting" many times I finally stopped by saying no more for a decade, and now that decade and another have passed, I will not even attempt a puff on a cigar just knowing that I am an addict. Picking up long distance running has helped keep the temptation at bay. While I can't tolerate the smell of a cigarette now, the aroma of a pipe filled with Captain Black, or similar, brings back fond memories of sitting in the cockpit at sunset in a cozy anchorage peacefully puffing away.

I admit that this was a bit ( a very big?) of a bummer, because I had promised myself that I would not be getting so many colds ...
Well that was the only downside, and since this is my second attempt, I was prepared.

Put your cigaret money aside, and buy tools, toys for your grand children, or a holiday.

For me the main advantage is that I have € 40 a week for boat building money.
Try to do something with your cigaret money, it is not the solution to the problem, but it is a great help

To all recently stopped smoking people "Hang in there you can do it"

Well I guess after two weeks I'm not going to jinx anything by fessing up here... I'm a quitter too!

This will be the second go at ending a 30+ year habit. My first attempt at around this time last year ended in failure due to some unforeseen occurrences causing great personal stress.

So far so good, no real cravings or ill effects on my disposition, so far that is.

As I have said, If one person managed to quit or even step onto the path of quitting, this post has been a raging success. I am proud to have my name associated with it, I thought it was great when it was suggested to me to put it up. The person involved knows and I thank you.

Hang in there an dont let the durries get ya,.

The support for this stop smoking thread that the forum community shows transcends the left/right politics and the, sometimes, juvenile behaviour exhibited in the bilge.
