    Default building a square rigger

I spent yesterday doing some filming for Practical Boat owner.

It was a feature about col regs which was shot here -

The bloke who was organising the shoot is young Ben Meakins from Practical Boat Owner.

Ben comes from an astonishing Solent family. A few years ago he and his dad built this amazing boat for a sailing festival at Burlesdon.

and the donor boat was this

the pictorial story of the conversion is here

their family blog which is full of great stuff is here

    bloody good I reckon.

For anyone following the PBO feature about resurrecting an old boat I am confident that Ben has the skills to see the job through. He and his dad have built lots of boats. Ben built a fine strip canoe when he was younger

So, anyone who decides to start sniping at sailing journalists for being French built lozenge obsessed flotilla holiday lush loving know nothings should take a breath or two before applying themselves with vigour to their keyboards and letting loose with a string of vituperation at lazy hacks

    there.... I feel better now

The square rigger is very cool.

John McPhee wrote about the Warsash Maritime Academy Ship Handling Centre where the manned models are up to 40 feet long and only have a 1/3 hp electric motor. Fascinating stuff.

    naaa

they were employing me as a cameraman not a hack - although they are going to run an item about building the duck punt - "first cut to first sail in seven days"

I am slightly embarrassed having seen Ben's proper canoe

I have to say though, the money is really useful - and I have managed to get it by undercutting the real sailing journalists
